NEW Samsung 50" Plasma 1080p 450 model with 3-D

My buddy and I just went shopping last night for a new TV for him and we found the new 2008 Samsung 50" that just came out. He was given and incredible price on it ($1500 CAN) and I am seriously thinking of pulling the trigger on this one so that when the new theater room is finished I can put it on my wall. Does anyone have any information links to this model? It looks like Samsung hasn't even posted it on their website but we were watching it last night. It looks AWESOME!

Is that a Plasma, or an LCD? Could you provide the model number? 1500 ANYTHING for a Plasma, NIB is a deal!

Probably a plasma, since it's 50". LCDs are usually 46" or 52".

I've heard the 3D feature is not really usable realistically at this point, you need a computer and whatnot and there is no standard 3D protocol or format spec AFAIK. Definitely good to see the feature entering TVs, now we just need a standard (maybe Blu-ray profile 3.D? ) that takes advantage of it.

I think it is the 450 model. Yes, it is plasma. No, I could care less about the 3-D but if it is the one that was revealed in March 2008 it was supposed to list at $2400 and be the first plasma on the market with 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Yes, you DID read that right!

edit: did a store check and got more specific answers than from the store salesperson last night. The item is the Samsung PN50A450 with 20,000:1 contrast ration. It is 1080i/720p. Any thoughts on this? For me to go up to 1080p it is another 900 buckolas. Is the difference between "i" and "p" negligible?

That would be the Panasonic 85 series, which has been available in Japan for over a month, and in the US for a week. And it's dynamic contrast ratio, so the numbers are meaningless (but still vastly better than any LCD TV).

$1500 is a steal for that plasma, btw.

Agreed. A steal indeed. Here is the most important question to answer.

Is your friend happy with it?

The second most important question, is he adopting?

Srsly, that sounds like a great set...

No my friend pulled out of the deal. Best price I found for the set online was $1699. Bestbuy was selling it for $1788. i was thinking of picking one up but in my research I have been contemplating the Pioneer.
