If you are someone like me with an Integra DTC-9.8, that should be true (although some hardcore audiophiles may argue bitstream is superior due to possible jitter inherent in HDMI PCM transmission). However, even in my case I'd like the option to use bitstreaming. You know, having a top of the line processor and all I'd like to be able to take advantage of its features

Also, in other cases some HDMI receivers do not apply DSP to PCM 5.1 input. So in some cases people may be unable to use the features of their AVR unless they use a bitstream. I know most older receivers are like this, but I don't know which (if any) of the HDMI 1.3 receivers are like this.

For those of us stuck indefinitly with amps that can't decode the new formats anyway, the PS3 is obviously the best option until we get such a reciever/processor.

Unless you have one that doesn't have hdmi inputs as I do, and then the lack of analog outs on the ps3 make it completely worthless.

Well obviously mine has HDMI inputs, so the PS3 is the perfect player for me, and the many with recievers like mine. No need to get pissy.

You need to find yourself a receiver mate.

Could someone elaborate on this for me?

What's wrong with using the optical out?

optical out = lossy dd5.1/dts5.1 downconvert. Most BDs will be 640kbps Dolby Digital.
analog 5.1 out on a player with decoders (i.e. bd50/s550) = full resolution sound, most BDs will have lossless sound of some variety.

You can't get 5.1 lossless (PCM, TrueHD, DTS-HDMA) or even high bitrate lossy (DD+, DTS-HD High Resolution) over optical or coax. You need either HDMI or Analog 5.1 for that.

I wasn't getting pissy, merely pointing out the flaw in your statement. Geesh, everyone here is getting ridiculously snippy lately. I think we all need a group hug.

I'm waiting for the second generation of receivers that decode the new formats before I upgrade. I figure they'll have worked most of the bugs out by then.

Ok. Good to know, thanks for the explanation.

Well I'll be, I love the DTS MA, but I never even knew the new firmware added auto resume! I was watching a movie, had to stop it, watched something else later. Today I put the movie i didn't finish in, it started exactly where I left off! I swear if this thing could upconvert as well as the Toshiba XA2 it would be the absolute perfect peice of hardware!

The auto-resume was actually added in 2.20.

I wonder how many BDs it can remember to auto-resume?

Resume is nice. They just need another future firmware update which adds that support to BD-J discs.

If I can't finsh watching a disc, I still remember the time code just in case.

I think Sony standalone DVD players remember up to 40 or so discs.

Its a bit more complex than that. For BD-J discs the code would likely have to be on the disc itself, not in the firmware. I'm baffled as to why they didn't have this from the start with either BD-J or HDi - if they can do bookmarks, they can also do resume (bookmark on stop to some location at some predefined slot, then check that slot for bookmark on play and offer to play from its position).

Sounds right, just after all the HD DVD crap, I've become a firm believer in that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If DTS MA hadn't been added, I'd still be on old firmware.
