Where is the 80gb PS3?

When was this discontinued? I was going to go Blu this weekend but they don't sell this model. What are the differences between the 40gb and 80gb besides ps2 backwards compatability? I know that can't be the only difference.

I am pretty upset since I was using $90 in Best Buy reward zone certificates to purchase this but they expire at the end of the month. The employees there told me the 80gb was going to be re-releases as a bundle pack when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out but I'm not sure of the validity of this. I love that they don't know they just say in the summer. Does anybody know if Sony is going to release the 80gb again?

I was going to get one too and couldn't find one. I Google searched and posted this question on GameFAQs, and was told the same as the Best Buy folks told you. Discontinued and will be re-released this summer at some point with the new rumble controller.

So I'm holding off until then.

If you are getting a PS3 for Blu-ray I'd strongly advise against the current 20GB/60GB/80GB PS3. Most of them are the old 90nm revision of cell and are based on reports usually are much noisier than the 40GB revision which uses 65nm... Mainly because the 90nm Cell can reach up to 140 degrees F at peak, needing some serious airflow to keep cool - 65nm runs around 40degrees cooler. Just a tip

Apparently there will be a 45nm revision which will be out in a couple of months that will be even cooler.

Perhaps the new summer 80GB will also use the 65nm Cell?

Just FYI, I did some surfing and it is listed as coming out in June per sonystyle.com. So at least what BB told me is not BS.

Yep, the 80GB will be re-released this summer with the new Dualshock 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4 packed in. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

So the rumors of it being a 120 gb version didn't pan out? Seems silly to put such a small drive in it considering how cheap they are now.

Just picked up the core 80GB for $399 canadian. Not bad deal at all. Sinse the PS3 is proven to be the best BD playback devise out there I will hang onto this one as a backup to my current 60GB version.

If you can count how many titles I've watched, I'll give you a cookie.

No playback problems on any of these discs.. In fact I've run into playback problems with standard dvd players (own 8) watching far less titles!

Derb's take on BD
