2.30 PS3 firmware update help

Maybe I'm a complete idiot, but I'm having issues with the 2.3 firmware update for the PS3 - I can't get it to download.

I went out and bought a Sandisk 1gb cruzer micro USB flash drive. I went to Sony's site, followed the directions to download to a computer/USB flash drive. So I went to download it to the PS3 last night and it was showing that no data was present on the USB drive. I called Sony and they said that I might have created the folders wrong and to check if the folder names are all in caps (they are). They also said that my security on the USB flash drive might be enabled. I checked that and it's not. So I'm kinda at a loss as to what's happening.

I did plug in the USB drive this again this morning just to check everything again. Right now, it's saved on the USB drive in the documents; downloads ; PS3 ; UPDATE. On the USB drive under documents, it has four catagories - music, downloads, pictures and video. I saved it in downloads, in the created PS3 folder.

So am I doing something wrong? Should I have created the PS3 folder in the catagory section with the UPDATE folder in the PS3 catagory, meaning doing it this way - documents; PS3 ; UPDATE? Or did I do it right the first time? I'm not a computer whiz by any means and this is my first time using a flash drive.

You created the folders wrong. The PS3 folder needs to be on the root of the drive, not under any other folders.

That's what I kinda thought but wasn't sure. So what do I need to do? When I plug in the USB, I click on F:drive and it brings up a "Documents" folder.

OK, tell me if I did this right. I clicked on f:drive with the USB drive plugged in. It then brings up "documents". I clicked on "folders" at the top of the page and then clicked on "create new folder" which I did (PS3) and then created the sub-folder "UPDATE". I clicked back out of that and clicked on f:drive again, which now opens up a "documents" folder and a "PS3" folder. So is that right?

Make sure the PS3 folder is in the root of the stick. That means the PS3 folder should be there when you browse "F:\"

I think that's where I'm at now. When I browse the f: drive, a documents folder pops up and a PS3 folder pops up. Then I would just need to create a UPDATE folder under PS3 (which I did), with PS3 and UPDATE all in caps, right?

Is this correct - F:\PS3\UPDATE (firmware update shows up in "update" folder)?

I could be wrong but doesn't the stick need to be formatted for a FAT file system for the PS3 to be able to read it?

yes, the PS3 does not read NTFS. You will need to format in FAT file system. Also you may need to the "triangle" to show all files.

That did the trick, thanks for the help guys! I didn't have to reformat, so that might just be for memory cards/sticks. I'm off to try out some titles.

I did skip through Predator abit, which I know isn't the best title to try out DTS-HDMA, but it was already in the player. Not a huge difference, but it does brighten up Silvestri's score nicely.

It was in the player, but I ejected it before installing the update.
