PS3 households using the console for movies is on the rise.

USA, Sony ad campaign boosts PS3 Blu-ray purchases

Quote:
PlayStation 3 households in the US are increasingly using their consoles to play Blu-ray Disc (BD) movies, according to research by Warner Home Video (WHV). During the final quarter of 2007, PS3 households spent around 15% of the time they devoted to using their PS3s watching BD movies, but in January and February 2008 this proportion had increased to 23%.
Not surprising as word gets out that the system is future proof already, others (non-gamers) will not look elsewhere for their BD needs.

At Best Buy I always tell people looking at BD players that the PS3 is the best one to get. Mmany can't get around the idea of owning a game console, but those under 30 usually get it.

I'm looking at going that direction as well when I finally chose to upgrade. I watched a SD DVD on my brother's PS3 and was blown away with how great the picture looked.

I just wish mine was quieter. It wasn't that bad when I bought it, but now it seems louder.

The bearings on the fan may be going. If that is the case it won't affect fan performance but it will gradually get louder and louder.

re: PS3 & movies, I too was surprised at the dearth of good games on PS3. I thought Sony would come out with a full roster to battle 360 last year but the good games were few and far between. As a result, it appears PS3 owners have been forced to watch movies on it to get use out of their purchase during the dry runs in between good games.

Yeah you may be right, it probably uses babbitt bearings, I may have to crack it open and replace the fan with a better one, or maybe I should try and return it as defective.

Also I've noticed that BD player prices have slowly crept back up, maybe it's just in my area, but that's an added incentive to get a PS3. They all seem to be hovering at $499 mark for a 1.0 profile, and $599 and up for 1.1 profile.

Mine was never intended to be used for gaming. The only game I wanted was the new GTA so it has pretty much everything I want.

Dayum! You bought that sucka for BR only and ONE game, and wow. There is no way I believe the PS3 was bought en' mass for your reasons. I'm happy for ya, don't get me wrong, but I am a bit surprised at this.

Wait, when did you buy it? That makes a difference in my response.

A co-worker who has a PS3 uses it more for gaming, but does rent Blu-Rays to watch movies. But he's bought fewer discs recently, and has pretty much only rented movies recently.

I wonder if the article is considering Blu-Ray rentals vs. purchases, considering many more places now have Blu-Ray rentals than before.

Considering the ps3 is the only bd player that is less than $400, is a Profile 2.0 player, and has all audio codecs decoded internally, I'm guessing there are probably a lot of people that have bought the ps3 for movie watching only. After all, the criticism of very few games still remains for the ps3. Gamers may be holding back on their purchases.

I hardly ever play games, maybe an hour or two a month at the most. My ps3 is a blu-ray player/media center. I have a lot of music on it, I surf the net on it, and watch movies. Games by far are the lowest ranked use on it for me.

Jast3r Roug3 has been suspended. Maybe a couple weeks off will change his attitude.
