Panasonic stumbles, Pioneer to the rescue?

Pioneer BDP-51FD
Profile 1.1
faster than the BD30...
15-second boot time
22-second disc load time
1-second off time
Decodes & bitstreams all codecs
confirmed source direct mode for use with video processors!!

MSRP: $599!

Profile 2.0 would be nice, but the more I read about it the more it looks like it will target PS3 gamers as opposed to HD DVD's online features which often included downloadable interactive extra features.

Panasonic lost a sale with their insane MSRP price here.

Pioneer introduces Elite BDP-05FD / BDP-51FD Blu-ray players - Engadget

Also, the color looks like it will aesthetically match the DTC-9.8 nicely, with the exception of the gloss finish I don't like... But I can live with that.

Hey, it sounds like this is a good match for you. But don't get upset later on if you want to watch the internet stuff that will be on 2.0 profile machines. That said, it's Pioneer, and it isn't over $1000. I'm shocked!

As long as they don't start withholding cool interactive stuff in an effort to get people to try downloading (they did this on HD DVD) I won't care. I searched for all of the BD-Live features being planned and it looks like most are targetting gamers, which the SoC chips on current players won't be fast enough to run anyway.

Here's another shot of it... It will match the Integra DTC-9.8 nicely, very similar accents and styling! Looking forward to using its source direct mode to fully expose the Reon's power!

One thing I don't understand...

Why release a non 2.0 player, at all?

The previous Elite models had a network jack. To me, this is just a step back, not foreward.

What am I missing?

What are THEY missing?

Perhaps they don't want to release something that may be underpowered for many BD-Live applications? I read about companies releasing videogames for BD-Live, and after witnessing the BD30 just barely be able to render a menu with BD-J scroll effects smoothly I'm thinking it would choke hard on an actual videogame.

They likely removed the jack from these models both to save costs and also save confusion. When they released those older models there was no BD-Live players, now there is. I know for a fact, though, that they will be announcing a BD-Live player later this year, but I heard it will be priced in the range of the Denon 3800...

For BD-Live standalones, the choice boils down to the Sony 350/550, Panasonic BD50, and Samsung 1500. The BD50 is way overpriced and doesn't have source direct, Samsung has a poor track record and the 1500 doesn't have source direct, and the 550 isnt coming out until September - plus it too may not have source direct (we will see when the 350 hits around the same time as this player). So this player very well be the best option, since it will likely be the fastest standalone released thus far and it has everything you need except BD-Live. I'd rather have "source direct" and faster speeds than BD-Live in a slower player w/o source direct.

So this has no network jack and can't be upgraded? Just wondering.

It can be updated by CD or by a thumbdrive perhaps.
