Unless I have my figures wrong, VHS was dominate for about 20 years. DVD was and still is dominate, which puts it around 11 years. With the speed of technology--not just home video, but all technology--that’s about right in terms of format lifespan. Obviously, that’s a simplistic rundown, but saying it’s "too soon" for Blu-ray doesn’t make much sense.

And I'm not going to tell you again about "Blu-gay."

I'm certainly not forcing you to buy Blu-Ray...but I'm just as ceratinly not going to stop buying it to appease you either. That would be rediculous. Seriously, there are not enough of us "techogeeks" to inspire a home video revolution. We will always need J6P to run the extra the mile. If Wal-Mart buyers don't embrace it, it will fail.

Your math is a little off there buddy!!! Sure DVD was brought out in '97, but VHS was still dominate until 2000-2001. So technically DVD has only been around for 7 or 8 years.

And to correct your math again.... 11 or now 7 years is not the same as 20 years.

You're missing my point. Technology is moving really fast now, thus shorter lifespans. In the past 20 years computers, phones, TVs, ect., have been evolving at the speed of light. Are you mad at the iPhone's touch screen because your phone’s number pad was "good enough"?

VHS didn't sell through to the home market for collectors until much after it's initial debut. It was a rental format.

People didn't collect movies en mass until DVD came out.

It looks like VHS started to become available for purchase (at prices under $100) around 1986. So that means that DVD will actually have a longer lifespan as a dominate, collectible format than VHS. So, again, why is it "too soon" for Blu-ray?

WRONG!!! I had a huge VHS collection as I was growing up, and I still have it. Now I have DVD and havent even yet upgraded what I have on VHS to DVD. Now you technogeeks are pushing this Blu-RAY crap.

So, basically, you're saying you don't really care about movies and you don't care about technology. The two things this forum is primarily about. So I repeat Wirehed's question: Why are you here?

And before you object to the notion that you don't care about movies, allow me to explain: Anyone who loves movies care about their presentation. They want to experience movies as close as possible to how they were intended to be experienced.

Since you apparently are content with pan & scan VHS I can only assume you don't really care about movies. What you care about is entertainment, and for that purpose VHS and DVD seems to be alright for you.

And that's fine. Different strokes for different folks and all that. But maybe you'd be happier in a forum populated by people discussing movies as entertainment (IMDb would work I think) as opposed to people who enjoy technology and enjoy experiencing movies as their director's intended them to be experienced.

I think Dakota Dave has a good 2-4 years of DVD before he might have to be forced into blu-ray. At which point his dvds will still work, and any bd players he buys will be as cheap as current dvd players are. I really don't see the alarm from him, as I doubt he still has the same dvd player he bought back in 1997.

Then again, DD may be arguing from a dial-up connection...likely from AOL. He still wants us to pay per hour to use the internets.

Seems one analyst is predicting dvd to fall in 2012. DD can breath easy until then, and of course, after then because dvd will still be around until probably 2017.

Funny, I watched Aliens on LD yesterday...

I'll tell you what...that LD sound was AWESOME, compared to the compression of DVD...

I still watch my LDs, and enjoy them. Is DVD better? Sometimes. I can't get some of my LDs on DVD...so I do what I can with what I have.

I bought a ps 3 for the blu ray. That in and of itself should signal the end.

As soon as I buy into a new technology it all goes to hell. So fire up your ebay accounts and start selling them disk!

There's a lack of quality films on Blu-ray, which certainly effects the adoption rate, I think.

I wouldn't say we are so much technogeeks, as we are more film enthusiasts, and want the best presentation, we can afford, and right now it means Blu-ray. I have lots of old VHS tapes, but I can't watch them at all, they don't even sell at Garage Sales, I had no problem getting rid of my LDs. DVD are still very watchable and will remain with us for some time, but I look forward to when my favorites are available on Blu-Ray.
