Where Have All The HD DVD Players Gone?

I waited to buy an A35, thinking the prices would fall during the fire sale. However, it seems I waited a bit too long as most HD DVD players I’ve seen online are selling for $600+.

Has anyone seen them for cheaper? I’d even settle for an A2 at this point. I just don’t want to be stuck with my HDA1 forever.

They were blown out in clearance sales or shipped back to Toshiba. You might want to consider an LG-BH200.

Yeah, I got my hd-a35 for $237. I didn't think it was going to get any lower than that. Yes, you did miss out. Hope you do well with your hd-a1. Or you can try to buy one off of chlgr. He has like 10 of them.

The A1 is fine for now, but it won't last forever and eventually I'll get 1080p, so . . .

Like I said, see if J will sell you one. He literally has like 5 of them.

Yeah I'm amzed at the prices of the HD DVD players themselves. I feel much better about paying a mere $270 for XA2, now that I have a new one working perfect from Toshiba.

Assuming J doesn't have an extra player to sell me, I’m wondering what would be cheaper: paying an exorbitant amount for a player or just selling/rebuying my HD DVDs.

I would say it would be better to sell/rebuy your movies. You may even find that some of those movies you bought to support the format war are not really necessary for HD.

I'm sure J will work something out with you.

Now I'm sure glad I got my extra XA2 when I did. And at that time there were getting pretty scarce, and the ones that were available were already starting to go up in price.

Well, maybe you weren't like Ruined, where you bought certain movies even if you didn't want them in HD, but were just supporting the format. In which case, you wouldn't necessarily have to rebuy those movies on blu-ray.

I keep thinking of Paula Cole (and unfortunately, her nasty underarm hair) whenever I see this thread title.

No, I never bought something just to support the format. I only buy films I want, and I even sold a few off that didn’t have good transfers. I would import HD DVD versions of BD exclusives, but my support went no further than that.

So, I’ll end up replacing most if not all of my HD DVD's. If I go that route, that is.

Thanks, J.

Does "up there" mean a really high shelf in Magnolia?

I'm happy with my XA2 & I think other than the HD-A1, that player is meant to last.... FOREVER!!!!!!!

If you can find one, get one. Who cares if its $3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Just DO IT.

At this point, it just doesn't make sense to drop the money for an XA2. Especially since Reon is so readily available in such affordable AVR's. The A35 should be all I need.

Though it's still glitchy on the fast forward and rewinding of dvds, the a35 has been a solid player without the 2.0 firmware upgrade. I am glad I got one before the prices skyrocketed like they had. Amazon was seriously giving away the players for a few months there.

Damn, I dunno.

I don't use the A35 but before I put it in storage I did update to 2.0.

Now, not so sure how reliable this player will be now after reading your previous posts on how that update killed it for ya.

It's possible the player (my first a35, before I sent it back to amazon) itself was messed up, but I don't know since it wasn't messing up on every disc, but only on certain movies. That leads me to believe it was firmware. Having kept it on the earlier firmware I haven't had problems with movies, and so I am satisfied with staying where I am at. That doesn't mean that 2.0 is defective, but I'd rather not have to find out after the fact.
