Verizon Cable box - Problems with Receiver
I remember a thread a while back that talked about specific problems with a cable box and receiver (it could have been a SAT box), but I couldnt remember what the exact issue was. My father-in-law is having Verizon install Fios TV on thursday, but over the phone they told him the box might not be compatible with his new receiver (Onkyo TX-606). I don't know the model of the box from verizon yet. Anyone know anything about this?
Also, they conveniently offered to sell them a box $100 that they are sure is compatible. What kind of crap is that?

I think you have a shady contractor, since they generally aren't allowed to sell anything, not even the fios equipement which is only available as a lease. Sounds like someone trying to make a little money on the side. That said, there's no real way to guess what the problem might be since no information is given beyond "not compatible." Do they mean on the video side? The audio side? What are they talking about exactly? That would have been my first question if someone made a statement like that to me. Fios uses the same Motorolla boxes the rest of the cable world uses, so I can't see where there'd be anything not working with that receiver.

Got some more information, though I don't know if it will help.
Verizon currently does not have Fios in their area, so they go through DirectTV until they do. Could it be a DirectTV box issue.

Personally there's too many people in the mix for my tastes. Why go with Verizon if they're just going to give you directtv? Might as well go to directTV and cut out the middle man. |

I have both the Directv H20, and a pair of HR21s. I never had an issue with my AVR ( Pioneer Elite ) or my TVs ( Mitsubishi WD 65734, Tosiba 46RX530, ) but when I inroduced my scaler into the mix, I started having sync issues with my HR21. I imagine that when the install is done, you will see weather or not it is going to work.
Gotta love HDMI j

I'd give it a shot. The Onkyo 605/606 are the hottest selling entry level receivers right now so it is doubtful that a company would have a box that is totally incompatible with it. Also, some HDMI quirks with the 605 were remedied with MAIN firmware update 1.04.

I doubt the installer even heard the model of the receiver when told it, or knew anything about it. I really do think it's someone just trying to scam come extra money. I don't know how it is there, but here in Dallas the cable installers for Time Warner are all independent contractors, many of whom are just slighty higher than a amoeba on the evolutionary scale. If I let the cable installer hook up my system the last time I got cable he would have had me trying to get HD signals through the s-video connection. Thus I never let them touch my system. So I really think this installer is just feeding a line of BS.

Either way, I thought signing a contract with Verizon for Fios TV which is really directTV until they start offering Fios in that area, was a mistake. So I convinced them to just go with Time Warner (no contract) until they do start offering Fios in their area, then they can switch.
