Denon scamming its customers?

Well, this is the straw that broke the camel's back:
Denon Sells 5 Feet of Cable for $500 - AVS Forum

Denon is now selling a 5ft interconnect cable for $500.

It looks like Denon is truly taking its customers for a ride the past couple of years. Note that I am not trying to anger or belittle customers that bought their products, but look at their recent history.

* Denon 2500 Blu-ray player, a rebadged Panasonic BD30 with less outputs for double the MSRP of the BD30. Last I checked it still had no official fix for the BD30's LFE bug which was fixed by Panasonic months ago.

* Denon 3800 Blu-ray player, $2000 price tag but incredibly glitchy with a long list of flaws many of still existing to this day. The Denon rep who hyped the player on AVSFORUM prior to its release and gave buyers the sense that Denon would stand behind it has since fled AVSFORUM as he has no solution to its many problems. The users seem to have given up and are now flocking to alternate players.

* Denon prepro, a monster prepro but again $6000? You can get the awesome Integra DTC-9.8 w/ Reon which has been compared to "high end" prepro audio gear like Anthem & Lexicon for $1600 and also the upcoming Marantz w/ Realta for $2500. What exactly makes the Denon $3000-$4000+ more expensive?

* Even the Denon receivers offer less value than similarly priced Onkyo counterparts. Meaning for every price bracket Onkyo delivers overall better A/V quality.

What has happened that has made Denon such a raw deal for consumers lately?

... This isn't because I said I preferred Denon in another thread yesterday is it?

You are right though, Denon is pulling a lot of crap recently. It's quite probable that my next AVR(or pre/pro) won't be a Denon.

I know copper prices have gone through the roof lately, but I think that's a bit excessive, even by Denon's pricing standards. Though since Denonlink never really took off anyway, I guess they figure they better gouge the five people who actually use it to get their investment back. Don't know if I'd go as far as to say they are scamming their customers though, if you are dumb enough to pay that much money for a cable you kind of deserve what you get.

As a lifelong Denon supporter, they have been dropping the ball a lot lately. Though I'll give them some slack on the whole blu-ray issue because blu-ray made a mess of things by coming to market before all the final specs were done, thus trying to conform to the blu-ray spec is kind of like trying to hit a moving target. Hell, I just counted them up and there have been no less than 9 firmware updates for my Sony BDP-S1 since I bought it a year and a half ago, most of them to fix disc issues. Where Denon gets the blame is that they should have just waited and worked to develop a really good player using the final 2.0 spec instead of trying to jump quickly on the blu-ray bandwagon, espcially at the prices they charge. Denon has never been great at support, but in the past they got it right off the start and didn't need to issue constant updates. I don't think they realized how much work supporting blu-ray was going to be, and aren't really prepared to do so.

I do have to take issue with your statement Ruined that "Even the Denon receivers offer less value than similarly priced Onkyo counterparts." They're within about $500 of each other, not bad. What's the more value you get with Onkyo receivers over their Denon counterparts? Pops on DTS-MA that can blow up your speakers? (oh yeah, seems Onkyo's not perfect either).

BUYER BEWARE!
The Denon AKDL1 cable is a hazard! I am writing this review with my left hand while my right is being spaghettified. After mis-reading the 300-page users manual and plugging this thing in the wrong way a catastrophic gravity well tore into my basement. I have only moments to live. PLEASE read the manual carefully. Wow, this really surprises me. I guess I've been away from this stuff for soooo long, I shouldn't be surprised by anything.

Has Denon made any public statements addressing this "trend"?

Peace...
