PS3 Blu-ray question

Sorry I have to ask this: I have an 16x9 HD digital tv and a ps3 and when I put a blu ray or standard def dvd that's 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 anamorphic etc, there are still bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Anything 1.85:1 or lower does just fine.

I do have an HDMI cable also.

How can I correct this? The only thing I can find in the ps3 settings is if your tv is 4:3 and you can choose letterbox or pan and scan.

I don't support fullscreen at all by the way. But after years of watching dvds that were anamorphic and not being able to see them anamorphically because I wasn't set up for it was...my own fault I guess.

Now that I'm set up for it, I want to watchthe 2.35 and 2.40 movies anamorphically.

Thanks for any help.

Blu-rays are not anamorphic unlike dvds. These are just straight up design for HDTV settings. What you are seeing is just fine as your HDTV is only a 1.78:1 Aspect ratio. The reason 1.85:1 looks good is because its so close to the tv ratio and overscan helps too.

2.35:1 or greater is the wider of the ratios and the reason why you still have the black bars on your HDTV. The picture is wider then the 1.85. Its the way the movie was intended to be seen and you'll eventually grow to love it.

Thank you for the help Silent Bob! Now I won't have to worry about it anymore. I'm new to blu ray (as of dec 08), so anything thing that I can learn is great. Again, thanks Silent Bob.
