New 21:9 widescreen TV on coming soon

It's interesting but, do we really need another size ?

Quote:
It’s getting harder to make an HDTV that really stands out, but Philips has gone to great lengths (well, widths) with a new set it’s recently unveiled. Forgoing the 16:9 wide-screen aspect ratio most new sets have, the Cinema 21:9, a 56-inch LCD, extends to nearly the same ratio as movies shot in the 2.39:1 format.

16:9 wide-screen looks narrow-minded compared to Philips Cinema 21:9 HDTV | Home Theater | ZDNet.com

Yeah, I don't see the point. Either way some content will has black bars, be it above and below or to the sides. And since most (all?) widescreen content produced for TV is 16:9, I don't see this as being a big seller.

Yep this is a totally unnecissary product. We still have lots of consumers resisting jumping to HD, add another aspect ratio TV to confuse things why don't you? Many HDTV owners don't watch that many movies(and some still complain of the black bars, which won't go away on 1.85:1 movies with this set).

I too see no need for these products. If people don't like black bars then spend the money in a projector and a masking system. Its the only thing that will really fix these annoyances for people

Simple solution. Two couches in the center of your viewing room with the backs together facing in opposite directions. Then have a 16:9 tv on one end and this monster on the opposite wall.

If they had made the screen taller, I think it might be more appealing. It looks really weird now. And imagine j6p stretching a 4:3 image to try and fill the screen on this bad boy.
