Derb,

Following on the heels of 'Mission: Impossible III,' Paramount Home Entertainment has announced it will release its first two full waves of Blu-ray disc titles, due in stores beginning this Fall.

Arriving September 26 are 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,' 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,' 'Four Brothers' and 'Sleepy Hollow,' to be followed by 'Aeon Flux,' 'The Italian Job,' 'Sahara' and 'U2: Rattle and Hum' on October 10.

The studio had previously released ten titles on HD DVD last month; all but two, 'We Were Soldiers' and the 2004 remake of 'The Manchurian Candidate,' are yet to be announced for Blu-ray.

Paramount now follows Warner Home Video as the second studio to begin release most if not all of its HD DVD titles on rival Blu-ray. Both have pledged to support both formats, letting consumers ultimately decide who will when the next-gen high-def war.

Though no technical specs or supplemental features are yet available for Paramount's latest announcements, new listings for each title have been added to our Blu-ray Release Calendar. Stay tuned for full details when they are officially announced.

I was parusing the bargin bin at Walmart today and came across HULK and it got me thinkning about the inevitable HD release. it would be so pretty and green. it was a Universal title right? so it will be out on HDDVD someday, correct ?

and what format does Fox support again? HD, Blu or none of the above ? I'd like me a Mr and Mrs Smith disc some day.

And Hulk is planned for a likely November release along with King Kong and Waterworld from Universal. That is what the rumors are suggesting at the moment. Definitely, not in stone, not even announced, as we find that discs move from street dates all the time.

But it is definitely being prepped and planned for release soon.

I don't know if this is official enough, but:

We've finally gotten additional confirmation on the expected street date for Warner's Superman Returns DVD. Our sources are sticking with the original 11/28 date we posted last month. So watch for both DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions to be released on that date.

Here is a review of the video of Grand Prix from IGN
Quote:
Grand Prix is presented in anamorphic widescreen (2.20:1) preserving the integrity of the original 65mm Super Panavision 70 negative. For a movie that's 40 years old, this transfer looks absolutely gorgeous: grain detail is minimal, color quality is vivid and focus is sharp and clean. Even in the scenes that Bass designed involving split-screen techniques, the separation is beautiful - and in fact, surpasses techniques used today on digital editing technology.
Quote:
Part of this film's enduring appeal is the integrity of its visual elements - as in, none of this looks older than a few years - and this transfer is bar none one of the best of the year. Anyone showing fealty to more recent releases (including those cut-and-paste Fast and the Furious pictures) will find little to complain about when comparing them to this masterpiece of cinematography and editorial construction.

Do you think Sony would put this much care into a more obscure older title as this? Nether did I...

We'll have to wait & see.

Those screen shots are from the 2-disc DVD version. Still a great example on how those screen shots can be compared to HD DVD ones, once its reviewed.

Of course they are from the DVD version, I said I got them off the IGN DVD review. I put them up to give people an idea of how visually interesting and cool this film is.

I just watched United 93 and I must say that I am suprised that Universal did not release it on HDDVD on the same day as the DVD editions. I'll be very happy when an HD announcement is made. There are some DVDs that are looking so good right now, its going to be scary when I finally see the HD versions. I can't imagine United getting much higher def than what I just saw... but I know that its going to be better.

I'll be picking up HULK as soon as possible. I am considering Waterworld, but I already have the DTS DVD, so i dunno about getting that one, and I am eargerly awaiting news of an extended release of King Kong, so no Kong for me either.

What happened to Corpse Bride? I havent seen it yet and was looking forward to it as I caught the trailer for it on an HD demo the other day and it looked gorgeous.

True there are some excellent dvd transfers & I thought the same. How will films such as Jarhead, Good Night, and Good Luck, Ray, benefit from a HD transfer? The answer is subtle. If you have photographic memory of how the SD looked, its easy to see where certain scenes become more vivid & sharp without seeing compression artifacts.

The releases will be theatrical cuts of both Waterworld & Kong. If the improvements on VC-1 encoding are 100 percent accurate, maybe these titles will be revisited. My personal preference for films released on HD, other than OAR, is the original cut of the film or the film as it was presented in theaters.

Same question can be applied to what happened to the original release date of Good Night, and Good Luck? Warner might be simply trying to add a little exclusivity between the 2 formats. As for the film itself, I had high expectations & was disappointed in the end. The film is good CGI eye-candy, nothing more in my opinion.
