Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 8.5/10
HD Audio dts - 7.5/10

The parts that had HD in them were really nice, but with some slight noise on dark scenes and in other areas. The dts track was pretty bland, but it was a documentary, so there's the reason.

It seems everyone has a different opinion on this one. I didn’t have any issues with the colors or skin tones. They looked correct and natural. However, I did feel that certain scenes were overly dark. Other than that, I can’t find much to fault here.

I thought it was a clever film. Both video and audio were Disney's typical pristine transfers.

What noise did you notice? All I saw was a grain, but I saw this in the cinema (twice) and can vouch for it being intentional.

The opening title scene when Jim is driving at night & a bit on the train when he first meets Kate. The HD-satt showin' maybe was tweaked. I'll have to watch the entire flick before I pass judgement.

The transfer definitely has a fair amount of digital noise reduction.

We what do you know, Sony can actually produce a good looking disc if they want to. No compression issues at all that I could spot. Good color and crisp images. Seems like there was a little black crush going on, but nothing to be overly picky about. Guess Sony finally decided it was time to join the rest of the studios in attempting to do it right. I never thought I'd say this, but good job Sony.

Can you guys give me a specific scene? I'm usually the first to harp on the noise (my PJ shows every-damn-thing), but honestly didn't see it this time.

Did you not see the BD's for Open Season, The Covenant, Casino Royale, Pursuit of Happyness, Rocky Balboa, etc???

Sony has been producing incredible transfers of their new titles. They just need to spend more time remastering the old ones instead of rehashing the original transfers made in the late 90's, early 00's like Vertical Limit and Fifth Element.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) (HD DVD)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus - 10/10

The noise is defintely not as bad or as consistent enough to be distracting but it is there. In fact most I spotted during close-up shots of Kate & Jim but there isn't enough of those shots during the film to cause a stir over. A few scenes do appear to look flat or soft, but I think it is mostly intentional. No perfect 10 because of this. Didn't see much grain either. Color is excellent, much better than the HD broadcast & overall a much more stable image too. I have nothing negative to say about the audio. For a dialog driven flick, vocals are clear, crisp & loud with no distortion. Background noise never interfere's or washes away dialog. Not a demo disc to show off HD imo, but if your a fan, this is defintely 1 title you have to have in your collection. Awesome flick! Focus Features is my fav independant studio & this title ranks with the best of their catalog.

If you look back up this thread you will find my thoughs on all of those but Open Season and Covenant (which I haven't seen). As I stated before, there are some compression issues in a few places with those titles that keep it from getting a near top score from me. Sorry, but I'm picky. Good enough won't do for me. Do it right I say.

Ultimate Avengers Collection (Blu ray)

HD Video - 7/10
HD Audio LPCM - 9/10

The colors look nice, but there's some strange artifacting going on in the outlines to the images in many places. Also some nasty color banding. Looks like they didn't spend too much time on encoding this one. The audio is impressive though. Oh yeah, and for some strange reason on my BDP-S1 it turned the trivia track on by default. Going to the menu showed that it was still turned off, and no matter how many times I clicked off it stuck on. I finally turned it on and then off and it went away. Don't know if the player or the disc authoring is to blame for this one.

Video: 9/10
Audio(LPCM): 9/10

The only thing holding this back from being reference is the source material, there's no getting rid of some of the grain and noise on the print(short of a multi million dollar Lucasian restoration). Otherwise, the movie is very sharp, fine object detail is always visible, excellent shadow detail, first rate. The PCM audio is amazing, this film sounds incredible(yes I know about the unpureness of the audio, meh I say, meh!).

Well i finally got to watch my copy of the movie and not knowing f it would be glitch free or not. Thankfully it seems i got a good disc as i was glitch free completely for my viewing on my HD-A1 2.0 Firmware. Though one thing to note. The video is just horrible in 720p for some reason as the straight edges are bumpy, colours and objects seem to bend and blend together on screen. This was completely fixed when switch to 1080i on my player (AVSForum has a thread about this problem) Other then that it was a great movie which was robbed of many Academy Awards last year. Great looking disc even with the gritty bland colour look and the sound is just as good. When the town breaks out into war the surrounds come alive and everything felt and sounded raw and not made to sound extreme like in some action movies. Worthy purchase

The Guardian (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9/10
HD LPCM: 9/10

Vintage Disney disc does well in my opinion. Plus I thought it was a good movie, and I will probably buy it.

Basic Instinct 2 (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 8.5/10
HD LPCM: 8.5/10

I thought this was a fairly boring movie, and the suspense factor really was'nt that high. Morrissey was rather weak in his performance, but Stone delivered in hers. It's an otherwise forgettable movie. Picture and audio were good, but not top-notch.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9/10
HD DTS: 9/10

Great film. I had tried to see it a year ago with a friend, but he fell asleep during it, and I never got to finish it. Seeing it in high-def made it more enjoyable, and Paltrow and Law did a great job in this noir-type film. Picture and audio were great. Bravo on the DTS track.

Flyboys (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9.5/10
HD DTS: 9.5/10

Bravo for Fox making a great transfer. The DTS track was incredible, and I can only imagine it might get better when I get the DTS-MA capability on my ps3. Until then, this was a great disc to see.

Planet Earth (Blu-ray)

Disc One: From Pole to Pole

HD Video: 9/10
HD Audio: 9/10

Wow...just wow. I am blown away, and looking forward to the rest of the discs.

On a side note, once again Magnolia has graced their HD DVDs with a TrueHD option. Unfortunately they messed it up by stating there was a French TrueHD track on the back cover when in reality it's an English dubbed TrueHD track.

Still it was a great transfer and the DD+ French track rocked.
