Just watched:

The Phantom Menance (HBO HD)

Video: 6/10
Sound: 6/10

I was really unimpressed with this. I just got HD cable for the first time and i've been watching all the HD channels like crazy. Phantom menance just did not look that great. Then I watched Attack of the Clones in HD and holy crap was this an improvement!

Attack of the Clones (HBO HD)

Video: 9/10
Audio: 9/10

A really nice video presentation and the sound was incredible! I am going to watch Revenge of the Sith later today.

This is through Direct TV mind you, but I recorded these in the HD-Tivo and compared all the movies to their DVD counterparts, both trilogies. They are almost identical, I'd give the HD versions a very slight edge in fine detail. But since the DD EX is better on the DVDs, may as well watch them. However the Phantom Menace showed no improvement over the DVD, the DVD actually was a bit better in places! It'll be a long while before we truely see these in HD.

You need to get to the eye doctor quick. That disc has tons of pretty obvious visual issues. The black outlines of the animation have bad artifacting in many places, there's some pretty bad motion blurring and a bit of color banding thrown in as well. This disc should be used to teach how not to do animation transfers.

Breach (HD-DVD)

On the whole, this is a sharp transfer, but there is actually quite a bit grain here and there, possibly intentional. But beyond that, I noticed edge enhancement in various places, plain not good.

Indeed, though I can't comment on that title yet.

Yeah, it's not nearly as bad as 4YOV, but when dealing with such a "traditional" looking film, any EE really does hamper the potential of the image, especially in HD.

The Holiday (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9/10
HD LPCM: 8.5/10

This film was awesome. I will likely end up buying, as I am a sap for romantic comedies.

Ice Age: The Meltdown (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 10/10
HD DTS: 9/10

Eragon (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9.5/10
HD DTS: 9/10

Wolf Creek (HD-DVD)

HD Video: 9/10
HD DD+: 8/10

Accepted (HD-DVD)

HD Video: 8.5/10
HD DD+: 8/10

This movie had glitches in three spots that had me have to eject and restart my player. This is the first disc that's done so. I have not gotten the updated firmware from Toshiba yet, so that may be the reason. Or the disc was scratched a bit and that may have been the cause. Either way, it was not the best movie watching experience for an otherwise funny movie.

Black Christmas (HD DVD)

Video: 7.5/10
Audio: 6/10

Not very impressive at all, rather soft with quite warm coloration (sunburned actors). No EE, but the PQ is just "meh."

The Dolby TrueHD audio is rather weak too, some of the score's cues sound strangely "hollow", almost like the sound is "inverted."

Shit movie too, even by shit horror movie standards. It has the feeling it's constantly just a half step above from a no-money horror indie--in a bad way. And I gotta admit I didn't watch it all, about a half an hour in it was strikingly apparent it was going nowhere at the speed of a bullet train.

Ghost Rider

Looks and sounds spectaular. Horrible Movie though, I actually fell asleep for a little while. Ghost Rider does not even appear until almost an hour into the movie. I don't think anyone was begging for an extended cut.

Primeval

Cool and fun little B monster movie. It does not matter how derivative and predictable these movies are, I still love watching killer beasties eat people. Also, the fact that it was actually filmed in Africa was a plus.

Very impressive transfer. There were some very minor blemishes, but Fox did a great job. I can't wait till I hear the lossless track on it.

Say it ain't SO!

Midnight Run looked & sounded like upgraded trash. Enhanced grain, metalic tin sound, DVD resolution - upconverted etc..

Wish I could, actually as old as Midnight Run is and being an 80's action comedy, I really thought it looked good. Universal is not helping the war effort one bit releasing transfers like this. I expect this kind of thing from Fox on Blu Ray, not Uni-fucking-versal.

Firmware 1.6 fixes glitches w/ combo discs.

Good to know! Whenever Toshiba deigns it to give me the update, I will be happy. I tried doing it via the ethernet port, but I just kept getting an error, so I gave up and sent in the card.

Be leary with Universal titles which have screen savers. I noticed with 1.6, they do not loop very good & can cause the player to freeze. Only takes a minute or so when the film is paused before the stupid Uni screen saver gets activated. 3 times I had to start Midnight Run disc from the beginning because of Uni's dumb ass screen saver glitches.

Ganth, you should check out "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" and its HDi features to get a glimpse of some of the cool stuff possible with HD DVD's interactivity component.
