Very bass heavy, to the point of overpowering everything else. Front dialog often too low and uneven. The audio actually had a kind of low fidelity sound to it, almost like listening to an MP3. Weird. Maybe I'm being overly picky.
The default LFE level of the XBOX 360 (and XBOX1 for that matter!) is ~10db too high compared to other digital sources. So if your receiver was calibrated for a different DVD player, when using xbox to play movies turn down the LFE volume by about 10db for most accurate bass.

I noticed overblown bass in this movie as well(on the HD-A1), but turning the sub down a bit worked nicely. REALLY wish this had a TrueHD track.

I thought the video looked really good. Audio was also pretty strong, and I was surprised to see the TrueHD track. I thought the movie was so-so.

Hey Snake

Could you go into a bit more detail about the PCM track? In terms of clarity and range?

I recently dug up my HK/R3 Columbia Tri-Star DVD of the film and was surprised at how "muffled" the DTS track sounds. It's like a veil is over the speakers. The Dolby track exhibits this too. I wondered why it sounded bad, thinking it was my set-up, so I popped in Sin City and its DTS track is like night and day in comparison. I guess it's my new amp revealing the limitations of the audio that I never quite heard before. So I was just curious as to how the PCM on the BD fares in this regard? It could truly be amazing sounding if this veil was lifted.

Kung Fu Hustle sounds incredible. I regularly watch the "string-blade-warriors" scene for demo purposes

Really? I remember the audio as being loud and very clear. The first fight where the fighters reveal themselves is incredible(sound effects of the guy using rings on his arms). I have a pretty high end sound system, I could see where lesser speakers might get muffled trying to re-create all the detail in the sound field, there is a LOT going on in many scenes.

Actually the entire track sounds muffled, not just the more intense sequences. I noticed it right away even in the dialogue from the center channel.

Also I'm pretty sure my system isn't weak.

And of course I'm referring to the HK DVD, haven't heard the BD yet.

This is as close to perfect a hometheater experience as I've yet had. FANTASTIC sound and just enjoyable all around.

The Contract (2006) (HD DVD)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus - 9/10
HD Audio dts - 9/10

I'll just note that the dts track is around 15-20db below reference. Once I matched volume output, both the Dolby Plus & dts were equal. Also being the first, First Look feature for HD DVD I was impressed that both the audio & video were just shy of perfection + this title also has an "In Movie Experience" type deal + 6 First Look trailers in 1080p & 5.1 surround. Not too bad.

HOT FUZZ HD-DVD

VIDEO: 10/10
AUDIO(DD+): 9.5/10

I love this movie and man i love this HD-DVD. Really i can't complain about anything in the video transfer. It looed very sharp, colourful and rich in detail (church rooftop scene) I'm so close to given it my personal blessing of a Reference an not the 10/10 rating. Something is just holding me back but i don't know why as it looked sharper then the day i saw it in the theater. The sound was pretty much exactly what i heard in theaters but i was expecting just a smidge more rear speaker action but they do get a good work out. They use a ton of bass in the film which might seem out of place for the on screen action but its what i heard in theaters and its the same thing they did in Shaun of the Dead. Only been through the Bloopers for the extras but can't wait to find the time to view some more.

ITS A MUST BUY DISC
