Black Rain (HD DVD)

Video (VC-1): 7.5/10
Audio (DTS-ES): 8.5/10

No real compression or film-related problems, but the image appears drab and dreary throughout, even in shots in broad daylight. The climax especially and a couple shots throughout have dimensional "pop", but the whole affair doesn't seem like that much of an improvement over the SE DVD.

The sound is quite nice though. On my system, the DTS track (full bitrate?) beat out the Dolby Plus in terms of heft and presence when switching back and forth. Zimmer's score is noticeably spread out nicely across the soundfield, despite some reviews saying surrounds rarely being used. Though dialogue has some obvious ADR at times and some of the stock action SFX sound dated.

In Good Company HD-DVD

On a side note, Before watching this I watched The Prestige (good movie) in a non-HD format, up converted to 1080i. While watching that I was thinking "Wow, this is practically HD!". Then I popped in the HD disc and I quickly realized that what I thought was great in the up converted disc was not nearly as good as the HD disc. I really reconfirmed how much better HD is over SD up converted.

I thought SH looked awful on BD but I was told it was the way the film was supposed to look. It's one of my favorite movies though and I never recall being that dissapointed with the DVD release.

Yep, it is intentional but there is a lot of detail beneath the noise & grain if you can get past that. There is a bit more on the BD version but not enough difference to throw a tantrum.

Ganthc,

Ouch! Thats all I have to say about that. I mean NP-2 was remastered for the DVD double-dip & the DVD I compared it to was the original collector's edition release only.

I agree. The film grain was obviously intentional, but it was taken too far. I don't see how it benefited the film, as it hid a lot of the detail that could have made this stand out as an hd film. In my opinion, it can't rate high in hd video quality for that reason. Was it the director's intention for the viewer to be distracted by the grain while watching the movie? Probably not...so, I think Paramount took the grain thing too far.

I was joking on the hd-dvd slogan thing. But, for such a newer movie, it's a shame they couldn't do a better job on it.

Ruined was hinting to avoid this title because a double-dip might be in the works. He didn't mention anything about the actual video quality. Havn't looked through AVS in awhile but there is probably a thread titled: "Avoid Nutty 2 like the Plague!"

I loved the rear effects in this movie with creaking floors and such. It really improved the mood in an otherwise terrible movie.

Nope, no one has said a thing about it there. Though that may have more to do with the fact that no one wants to admit they actually bought Nutty 2. You're a brave man Derb.

I actually like ATL & Rumor Has It... more than Nutty 2. So far ATL is the best film released on either format!

HD Video: Demo
HD LPCM: 9/10

This was a flawless video transfer. I was really impressed with it, and the movie was good as well. I liked the suspense. The audio was good, but there was a lot of silence so not a demo audio track.

I meant that I was unaware the movie wasn't spoken in English, but had an English track. I dislike watching mouths speak that clearly don't match what is being said.

Like The Frighteners? There are plenty of scenes throughout which looked dubbed.

Yep, I didn't know The Host was a foreign film either. The Korean track isn't that bad but the WHITE subtitles suck!
