Curse of the Golden Flower (Blu-ray)

Actual artifacting in the palace scene near the end. It actually pulled me out of the movie to see it. Also there were some dirt spots. But otherwise the movie was good.

I had to turn this bad boy waaaaaaay up to even get it to a reasonable volume. DD+, my ass.

Miami Vice

HD Video: 9/10
HD DD+: 9/10

Where HD cameras were used, this movie shone. But Mann's gritty style kind of diffused it from being a "better" video presentation.

Weeds: Season 2 (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9/10
HD LPCM: 9/10

It seemed like the further it got in the series the less the HD picture got. Mainly because there were more night scenes in the second disc, and it didn't look impressive at night. Good season though!

I found the first season looked ok but the nighttime scenes were filled with noise & grain. I didn't see any of this in season 2. Still a solid release from Lionsgate & the LPCM is much better than the dts from the first season.

I was really quite impressed with the picture on this one. A ton of added detail over the standard release.

I've watched two episodes of "Heroes" on hd-dvd, and the detail and colors really shine on this. There is inconsistency with grain, with some scenes looking clear and others (usually sky shots) with lots of it.

I also saw like the first 20 minutes of "Dawn of the Dead" the remake on hd-dvd, and the TrueHD track sounds good, but you have to really turn it up. This is the director's cut, and he does a little intro to it. The PQ is mixed. It has a really big red push to it, and there is inconsistency in grain. Look at the shot where Weber looks at the toilet before he throws it through the window. It's actually a pretty dirty shot. That said, it is an improvement from sd-dvd, and I still get scared at the beginning scene with the girl and husband.

Hmm.. I watched the pilot of Heroes from a sampler disc in SD upconverted & it looked quite good. Will be a bit of a wait before I get to the HD set. Hope the grain isn't too inconsistent. As for Dawn, I know most of the film was shot with grain intentionally to give it a gritty look. Color saturation on the SD wasn't good either but again I think that was intentional.

All the added director's cut footage has black speckling.

Ah, thanks for letting me know that. It seemed weird that it was so much worse than the rest of the shot. Yes, grain is to be expected. It doesn't distract really. There are some shots that are softer than others, but that also seems to be the style of the movie.

Yes, it is demo material for video. And I thought it was a good suspense flick too.

Geez, this could have been a great transfer if it were not riddled with edge enghancement all over the place. There is at least an improvement with detail & color. Audio is near flawless. dialog could use some room for improvement. Its balanced very well, just sounds a little distorted at high volume.

I have heard complaints about low bit rates for vc-1 transfers, but this is one movie where I think that the efficiency of vc-1 really shown. The bit rate would hover around sd-dvd levels for some time, but the image was never anything but perfect. I did notice the color banding in the sky, especially over the beginning of the Central American scene. But the detail really popped on this movie. The audio soundtrack was lush too, and I was impressed overall with the movie. It was fun, and I enjoyed it. Gave me a bit of nostalgia for my youth. I hope they make more movies!

Immortal Beloved (1994) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 8/10
HD Audio Dolby TrueHD - 7/10

The worst balanced TrueHD track I've heard. How the heck did this happen? To clarify, each audio channel does sound good but the mains are 4db above reference, center -2db below reference. The music sounds excellent & actually is the only balanced part of the soundtrack unfortunately. Subtitles are necessary. LFE is sporadic, all over the place in all the wrong moments you'd expect to hear it. A short war scene in the film increases overall db output 25% The video isn't too bad, encoded MPEG-2 I found only color & fine detail as an improvement over SD. Minor speckles of dirt & grain are present & the print seems to have been kept in good shape.

I hadn't seen this movie before. It was pretty entertaining. I chose the 1.5mbps DTS track over the poor DD+ track.

HD DD+: 8/10

I forgot how much I enjoyed this film. I might consider buying it.

The Lookout (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9.5/10

A pretty good blind buy on my part. Gordon-Levitt has been in some great films lately.

The Good Shepard (HD-DVD)

HD Video: 9/10
HD DD+: 8.5/10
