I wonder if its kind of like the same problem i had with some Universal HD-DVDs on my HD-A1. I got the same look you described on my Children of Men disc in 720p. Switched it over to 1080i and all the problems were gone and was one nice looking disc to boot

How to describe this transfer... if I didn't know better, I'd swear it's a 3-D movie! Audio is expectedly amazing for a PCM track.

Yeah, when are we finally going to see that in the States? It would be an automatic buy for me.

American Psycho (Blu-ray)

This was disappointing. The print was dirty, there was edge enhancement, etc. I didn't bother finish watching it, though I got more than half way through.

We're all them rentals?

Too bad you couldn't sit through the rest of American Psycho, the second half is pure demo material.

Yes, all rentals. I think I need to downgrade my Netflix subscription. There will be no series on TV coming on, along with football, I just don't have time to really watch all those rentals along with my movies that I've bought. I have it at 6 at a time, but I'll take it down to 4 at a time. I had it up high because of TV series.

I was surprised at how much I liked this movie. Maybe it's the nostalgia aspect, but it was a blind buy for me during the amazon deal, and I'm glad I got it.

Vacancy (2007) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 10/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 9/10
HD Audio LPCM - 10/10

Yeah great PQ & AQ. Mostly a dark picture thoughout with hardly any daytime shots to really wow me.

Delta Farce (2007) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 8/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10
HD Audio LPCM - 9/10

First VC-1 Lionsgate title so I glimpsed at the peak bitrate throughout. I'd say average 32mbps with a peak around 42mbps. Some shots look really good but most of the film is flat as well as color. I was expecting a bit more from the 6.1mbps 7.1 LPCM soundtrack. Dialog is always clear & dynamic range is quite consistent but when action presents itself there isn't much going on in the surrounds.

Darkman HD-DVD

Video: 9/10
Audio: 8/10

Very impressive, the video is as good as we can hope for for this movie. The audio left a bit to be desired, the score is loud and bombastic and always clear, but gunshots and explosions have no LFE to them.

The Replacement Killers (Blu Ray)

Video: 10/10
Audio: 9.5/10

Excellent presentation for an excellent little movie! Video was just perfect, better than I was hoping for. The audio was excellent as well, but dialog was a bit drowned out in the music/sound effects sometimes, especially in the new scenes. Speaking of the new bits, I like them, explains more of Chows character. Absolute must have!

Cool, I bought it and haven't watched it yet... it's a weird thing but I love this flick.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Poland) (HD DVD)

Video (VC-1): 8/10

For being on a 15GB disc, it consistently looks very good. Some of the scenes involving darkness look a little soft, but I suspect some of this due to filtering, especially in shots involving Jolie. It looks good enough to fool you into thinking it's on a 30GB disc.

Audio (DTS 5.1): 8.5/10

Solid audio with clarity and aggressive surround use from both the Dolby Plus and DTS tracks on the disc. No real noticeable difference between them.

Silent Hill (Germany) (HD DVD)

Video (VC-1): Reference

Absolute Perfection. Among the best transfers I've seen yet on HD DVD, seriously.

Audio (DTS-HD 5.1): 9/10

Haven't heard the BD's PCM track, but this track is strong as hell.

Rocky Balboa (Blu-ray)

Video (MPEG-4 AVC @ mid-20s-40MBps): 9/10

This one looks very good, but only within the limits of its exaggerated coloration. Colors are often either quite bold or desaturated. Fine detail tends to be on and off (certain shots are a bit soft), but this is a strong presentation.

Audio (Dolby 5.1 640KBps): 9/10

I couldn't detect any problems, dynamic range is great and bass response is striking without ever sounding too boomy or harsh.

Reservoir Dogs (Blu-ray)

Video (MPEG-2 hovering at 20MBps): 6.5/10

Unforunately, it honestly looks barely better than the SE DVD with its strangely "light" blacks and "not quite right" pale fleshtones. Really, faces look so stark you'd all of them were shot in the belly, not just Mr. Orange. It looks like a good DVD upscale with very little HD "pop." Flat and smoothed over with little color depth for the most part. No idea how High Def Digest could have given this transfer a 4/5 and stating it has film grain and accurate color--my copy must be defective...?

Audio (DTS 1.5MBps): 7.5/10

Couldn't really hear any difference from the way I remember the film sounding, which is solid, but don't expect much over the prior DVDs.

The Devil's Rejects (Blu-ray)

Video (MPEG-2 hovering around 15-25MBps): 8/10

Pretty damn good, the film grain shows through better than on the DVD, which looks more smooth and the grain that is present looks more like video noise. I imagine it would look better with a VC-1 or AVC encode, but it's nice here. Certainly more of a positive difference from the DVD than LG's Reservoir Dogs.

Audio (DTS 1.5MBps): 8.5/10

Strong like the half bitrate DTS track on the DVD, if not stronger. Comparing this DTS track with the 640KBps Dolby track also on the disc, the DTS has a wider sound field. The Dolby track centers most of the soundtrack in the errr..center channel.

Crank (Blu-ray)

Video (MPEG-2 hovering around 20-35MBps): 7/10

Not absolute reference like it should be, but fine. The main point of contention is many scenes featuring edge enhancement which flattens depth considerably. The funniest thing is most of the scenes featuring Amy Smart lack it.

Audio (Dolby EX 640KBps): 7.5/10

It's decent, but I expected much more zany surround use. Perhaps the PCM track fixes this.

Sneakers - HD DVD - Some scenes really show off the added resolution and the whole thing looks great, but it's far from a showstopper.

Movie is one of my favorites though.

ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2 Blu-ray

VIDEO: 7.5/10
AUDIO(Dolby-EX): 8/10

Finally watched the 2nd movie on the disc and after being disapponted with the first movie i was impressed by the 2nd one. The story was much better and the animation was ever so slightly better too. Sadly the transfer seems a bit soft in areas and some slight interlacing issues in a few scenes. Although the colours were dull in some scenes it was still much better looking then the the first outing (brighter jungle scenes) The sound track this time i opted for the Dolby EX track and not the 2.0 PCM track like the last time. About the same in action but i guess its a bit higher in score because of the setting and my receiver processing of Doly 5.1 EX then a 2.0 PCM in sound field seperation. Again would love to give this another try one day when i finally get the HDMI receiver to enjoy the true LPCM 7.1 track on the disc
