Mission: Impossible III (2006) again with "Enhanced Commentary" feature

I really enjoyed the 3rd flick. It was like a 2 hour JJ Abrams Alias episode. Watched the enhanced commentary with JJ & Cruise (basically a commentary with PIP) & there is some interesting info as well as how both felt during the filming & picking apart certain scenes. A neat thing about that enhanced commentary.. while you see them in the little box watching/talking during the flick there are a dozen times either Cruise or JJ will say "can we stop this scene here for a moment". The film stops & shows you just them on the whole screen talking more in depth about the particular scene. Of all the "in Movie Experiences" from Warner & a few "PIP access" from Universal HD DVDs, I liked this Paramount one the best.

I am curious if anyone has played with the audio on the Sleepy Hollow HD-DVD. I was watching it recently and I started toggling between the DD+ and DTS soundtracks. And wow, was the DTS better. The DTS soundtrack actually used the rears!!!!!!! I could not believe the difference in soud quality. The DD+ sounded like mono compared the the DTS soundtrack. Man, now I understand why some people would say that this soundtrack is reference when I thought it was an anemic missed opportunity that was completely front loaded and uninspired. How was there such a difference in quality? Was there a different sound editor for both mixes. Just crazy and I have never heard such a discrepency between sound formats.

The only thing I can come up with is the players downconversion of DD+ to DTS. But considering the DD soundtrack on the SD-DVD is anemic as well, I do not think that is the case.

This is a great disc, not quite the one I'll use to show off my system since there isn't all that much to actually show off HD, but it's perfect. The colors are extremley rich and alive, the bass on the TrueHD is earth moving. Add to the excellence of the movie itself, and you've got quite an experience!

The Thing

Video: 8/10

Once the night scenes started, this movie looked pretty good, colors were very nice. The DD+ track was a little more active than I was anticipating, nice bass as well.

Had a few glitches with this flick. Looked like a signal loss. Picture went all funky but the sound was not effected. Once the PQ came back, I searched back & it played through fine. This happened 2 or 3 times. Odd, sinse I am using component. Kinda simular with HD DVD glitches I have had where the PQ pixelated & distorted. Aside from that, I was very impressed with the video & audio quality. Didn't expect as sharp a picture as X-3 because that was AVC encoded & this is MPEG-2. Good stuff.

Another dissapointment from Paramount PQ wise, most of the film is flat looking with very little HD wow factor. The last sequence gets going, and suddenly it looks perfect, highly satisfying. On the audio side, this movie rocks, no complaints there.

Any doubts about Mpeg4 can safely be laid to rest with this transfer! The level of detail is incredible, this movie really needed HD, looks exactly as I remember it in theaters. That is to say, there is a lot of intentional grain on daylight exteriors for the gritty post apocayptic look(which is the only thing that keeps this movie from being reference quality), and gone are the halo's on the DVD. My only compaint about the release, is that it seems impossible to remove the Japanese text from say, newspaper headlines and signs. At least I can't figure it out with menu navigation, but it's a minor issue.

Audio is predictably spactacular, if slightly front heavy. The bass in this film will shake off anything on your shelves thats under 3lbs! Great release, if this is the sort of quality to be expected from Japanese releases, I can't wait for xXx!

Now if it were only in an actual HD-DVD case.

Swordfish

Video 9/10.
Sound 7/10.

Wow this movie looked good. Better than I thought it would for being one of the very first HD releases. The very bright scenes, especially the city scapes during the end bus chase were ultra detailed and the dark scenes looked fantastic. I didn't notice any halos or compression artifacts anywhere.
I only give the sound a 7/10, but thats 7 out of 10 on an HD scale. It was a fine soundtrack for DVD, but I expect just a little more oompfh from HD, and this soundtrack didn't give it. The surrounds were very active at just the right times, but the voice reproduction and clarity of the soundtrack just wasnt there.
If you liked Swordfish and just want a mainly mindless, very pretty film in HD, pick this one up.

Superman 2: The Donner cut
Video 8/10
Audio 8/10

First off, wow, I knew there would be some changes, but this was a total overhaul. It's obvious that some things were never filmed, thus the result, especially in the 1st half is choppy. The new sequences are more satisfying in many ways. In the original it was like, oh ok, he gets his powers back, cool. In this it's almost a tear jerker. Plus the way Lous forgets is much improved. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than it was! Kind of feels like watching the alternate version of Anchorman, but in a way that makes more sense.

On the tech side, video is suprisingly good. These movies were shot soft by an idiot, so it only gets so sharp, but it's improved over the DVD. The audio is good, except the bass is waaay overdone. I had to turn my sub back quite a bit, the opening sequence is especially obnoxious. But after that it was very nice.
