Die Hard (Blu Ray)
Video: 9/10 Audio: 9/10 I am happy to find once again that peter Bracke is way off in his assessment. This is by far the best Die hard has ever looked, deep inky blacks, nice smooth image, not the sharpest, but not bad. The audio rocks, can't wait to hear the lossless version if Sony would ever get on the ball with DTS-MA for the PS3.

Pathfinder (Blu Ray)
Video: 8/10 Audio: 9/10 HD definitly helped this, but the look of the film is so gritty, it's far from refetrence material. Often it's hard to tell whats happening on screen through the bulky viking armor and heavy snow, but I'd say the film looks as it's intended. Audio is appropriatly full of bass and loud screaming.

Yeah it's not a great movie. I explain it to people by saying it's like 300 meets Last of the Mohicans, but a third as good.

Quite possibly the best review I have ever heard for this movie.

Hairspray (blu-ray)
HD Video - 10/10 HD Audio DTS-MA (core only) - 9/10 Okay all you demo material lovers, here's your disc. I hate to use the word flawless, but I couldn't find any faults with this disc. Picture is amazing and the sound is outstanding. I can't wait to hear it in all its MA glory once I get a receiver that will handle it. Tons of pretty good extras all in HD as well. Nice to see John Waters get the props he deserves for the original. I hope New Line keeps up this level of quality with their future discs. David Gilmour: Live at the Royal Albert Hall (blu-ray) HD Video - 6/10 HD Audio Dolby TrueHD - 9/10 And on the other end of the spectrum from Hairspray, we have this disc. It's pretty obvious from watching it that most of the cameras were SD and are upconverted. The few cameras that really are HD, namely the main stage closeups, suffer from many of the problems cheaper HD cameras tend to - horrible problems handling black and low light levels and bad compression in the source. Guess what, this is a concert, thus it has a lot of black and low light levels. If it wasn't for the lossless audio I'd say don't bother with HD for this one. The surround mix isn't that impressive, but it is crystal clear, and it's Gilmour who sounds great, so I can't really give it too low a rating for audio. ![]() 2001 (blu-ray) HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio PCM - 9/10 Another great disc. I'm almost tempted to give it a 10, but the print suffers from too many dirt and scratches, especially in the last reel. 2001 really deserves a Criterion level clean up. But damn, 65mm does look great in HD, print damage aside. For a film that depends on music a great deal, they cleaned it up very nicely. Getting to enjoy films like this is the reason I have HD at home in the first place. Yay! If you don't buy this disc, you have no business watching films. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (blu-ray) HD Video - 8/10 HD Audio DTS-MA (core only) - 8/10 Not a great film, though not as bad as many have made it out to be. Surprisingly good video for what appears to be mpeg2. I only noticed a few compression issues here and there, mostly in space scenes. Pretty active surround mix and nice and clear. |

Sadly it seems like they didn't fix anything from the Satellite broadcast my theater did back in September. Imagine watching it on a movie theater screen and seeing the macroblocking there. I was hoping it was a satellite feed issue or again something they would fix for the transfer later on (especially with the delays it had) but i guess not. Still its the music that you want to hear in HD and at least it was good then and still seems good now.

Just finished watching Order of the Phoenix. I was very very impressed.
Video: 9.5/10 (i'm using 10/10 as reference) Audio: 10/10 The TrueHD track is quite something. I think it sounds better than Goblet of Fire. The Video is also on par with Goblet, but i'm giving OOTP the edge. The special features on the UK 2 Disc set are quite nice as well. I'm going to watch the movie again with the IME and focus points on. This will be the one to beat for the Holidays. The A/V quality and special features make this a definite buy. The case is a little thick though. Not like the Paramount 2 disc sets, this one is just a bit thicker.

Need help! I'm trying to watch OOTP with the IME on but I keep getting the 0x4094c00c error (I looked it up, it says it's a script failure). Anyone know what I can do to fix this? I'm updated with the latest firmware (2.4 on my A1) and it gives me this error with the 2.0 firmware as well.
I'll take any suggestions! (sorry if this is the wrong thread, just coincides with the last post).

The Host (Blu-ray)
Video (VC-1 hovering @ 20Mbps): 8.5/10 Audio (DTS 1.5Mbps): 8.5/10 Subtle DNR is present, tending to only affect close-ups. Also there are instances of strange aliasing, otherwise a surprisingly nice transfer and solid DTS track. Die Hard (Blu-ray) Video (MPEG-4 AVC hovering @ 30Mbps): 8.5/10 Audio (DTS 1.5MBps): 7/10 It looks its age, but in a good way. Grain seems intact, color is nicely saturated, and print damage is basically non-existent. Though quite a few shots are slightly out-of-focus. The DTS sounds a lot like the Five Star Collection DVD, with the two massive explosions in the film sounding very harsh and "turn volume down immediately" unpleasant. Die Hard with a Vengeance (Blu-ray) Video (MPEG-4 AVC hovering @ 35Mbps): 8.5/10 Audio (DTS 1.5MBps): 9.5/10 An enormous upgrade over the awful looking DVD in both image and sound quality. The only quibbles over the transfer is some edge enhancement and some color issues, mainly pinkish fleshtones and some drab scenes. The DTS track is nearly perfect, but sometimes the voice track sounds terribly thin and limited, especially Willis for some reason. |

Die Hard 2 (Blu Ray)
Video: 8/10 Audio: 9/10 Ah the 80's, when you could kill anyone, and no one need show the slightest bit of remorse lol. The video is good for the most part, but the color scheme respresents what I've seen in the past is likely how it's meant to look. That is to say interior shots veer heavily toward the red, giving a grainy clostrophobic look to many shots. Audio is fine here, nothing at all to complain about. Die Hard 3 (Blu Ray) Video: 9/10 Audio: 10/10 Indeed this is a massive improvement over the awful DVD with 3 inch thick edge halos(they were that large on a 147in screen anyway). Not always as sharp as I'd like, and grain pokes through here and there, but overall a very clean transfer, colors are incredibly vibrant. The audio on this one simply rocks, again looking forward to DTS-MA decoding for the PS3.

Behind Enemy Lines (Blu-ray)
Video (MPEG-4 AVC hovering at 20Mbps): 7/10 Audio (DTS 1.5Mbps): 10/10 It looks decent, but usually never that impressive for a 2001 film except for a few shots here-and-there. The DTS track is the sole reason to grab this, absolutely perfect demo material. Reservoir Dogs (Dutch Import) (HD DVD) Video (MPEG-2): 7.5/10 Audio (DTS 1.5Mbps): 7.5/10 It looks better than the Blu-ray edition, but there are still some issues. The BD looks harsher, a tad softer, more reddish, and what almost looks like clipped blacks in comparison. This HD DVD has a more stable appearance with better color, depth, and details like hair looking more "reach out and touch" natural. Still, the color seems artificially drawn out like on the BD and the "remastered" DVDs, mostly seen in fleshtones (especially evident in the naming scene, Buscemi looks made up for burial) and a touch of edge enhancement is also present. Still, the "little" advantages add up to a better presentation over the BD and an HD DVD that holds on its own. Funny thing to note with that this disc was announced to have a VC-1 encoded transfer, but reads as MPEG-2. It doesn't "look" like an average MPEG-2 encode though. For a film with so many uniform surfaces (walls, sky, distant warehouse shadows), I didn't notice any artifacting, which is odd. The entire transfer has that "easy-look" of VC-1/AVC. The DTS track sounds just like the Blu-ray. Other notes: - Loaded and played fine on my HD-A1 with 2.4 firmware. If it played on this (the A1 was never released in Europe), it should be ready to go on any other model. - Only 7 chapter stops. - The Dutch subs are completely optional. - No "during play" pop-up menu, but there is a main menu (in English BTW), like a DVD. - No sound pitch problems. - ICT is not enabled over Component, so no down rezzing. - Comes in a "standard-size" U.S. Elite HD DVD case. - George Baker must be a star in the Netherlands. There's a commercial for a "Best-of" album of his in Dutch on the disc. ![]() |
