Urban Legend (Blu-ray)
HD Video: 9/10 HD TrueHD: 9/10 The picture is soft in a few places at the beginning, but overall this is a sharp presentation of a ten year old film. The audio was about as good that could be expected. Great late 90's songs included.

Saawariya (2007) (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio Dolby TrueHD - Reference I read a bunch of reviews for this title & the majority feel this is the best of the best picture quality however the first issue I noticed when I popped it in was unfortunately DNR. While I don't mind DNR if it isn't excessively used but to my surprise it is in this transfer. Looking past that, the rest of the image throughout is flawless. I caught a few scenes which appeared soft but I'm 99% sure it was intentional. The audio in the reviews I've read didn't appreciate what they claim could have been constant surround usage. Excuse me, but this accusation is pure non-sense. Lowering an audio rating because you feel there could have been more surround usage is in the same ballpark as saying you do not like grain in films such as 300 so you should lower your rating. What do these people expect? I'm dumbfounded. Anyways, my take on the TrueHD track is nothing short of spectacular. Dialog is crisp & clear throughout (This is where reviewers wanted more surround usage ) even with some channels which are active with background noise. One thing I do agree with the reviews I've read is not a technical one. I would have liked the film to have more music. These numbers really do make this track demo worthy & rival some lossless concerts imo. Definitely one to check out even if your not into bollywood. ![]() |

In this case Sony might have just had to work with what they got from another company or the film was DNR'ed in post. Most of the modern Bollywood films I have on DVD are hyper smooth, so it could be the trend. |

Doomsday
Video: 10/10 Audio: 8/10 I had to mark down the audio because the dialog is consistently drowned out by the music and effects. Between that and the thick accents, i switched subtitles on 5 minutes in. Video is however flawless, pure reference gravy. The movie is a lot of fun, more than a few nods to my namesake, the score especially was great(could have been the music for the third Escape film). Excellent blind buy for me. Also in case no one noticed, I stopped noting wheither it's a Blu Ray or HD DVD I'm reviewing, since their all Blu Ray from now out. I'd suggest all do the same unless it's an HD DVD.

Lost Boys: The Tribe (Blu-ray)
HD Video: 9/10 HD DD: 8/10 The movie was entertaining, but dragged a bit in some spots. I didn't find the vampires as menacing as they were in the first movie, but all in all, it was an okay film. Video was decent, with varying grain levels. Audio was weak.

The Lost Boys
Video: 9/10 Audio: 9/10 Very solid transfer here, aside from a thin layer of grain visible in most scenes(and the occasional odd shot with lots of grain, typical 80's) the image is largely perfect. I don't see it looking any better than this. Audio is great, the TrueHD really lets the 80's pop music shine. Dialog is always clear, two complaints is that the mix is largely front heavy, and there's hardly any LFE activity, typical to a movie this old. Lost Boys: The Tribe Video: 9/10 Audio: 8/10 Video is solid if unremarkable, and the standard DD pales in comparison to it's 20 year old predacessors TrueHD track. Maybe watching these back to was a mistake lol, as it only further showed how crappy this sequal is. I mean the opening credits of the 1st one has a song by The Doors, this one has a song by that crappy band Airborne that really really wished they could sound like AC/DC. The acting was shite all around. I can't say Angus Sutherland was bad per se given what he had to work with, his character is based pretty much off Patrick Swayze's from Point Break, only he's a vampire. Also the movie is very rushed somehow. It feels like there is a beginning, and an end, with no middle. My biggest complaint would be the way the vampires die. When staked, they turn to stone, and blow up. Now I can understand different movies handling things like this differently, but when you claim to be a sequal, please don't change shit like this(save your so called 'original', or rather Queen of the Damned rip off ideas for another movie)! That just really bugged the hell outta me lol. The two bright spots are; 1 the fat guy with a pony tail playing a saxaphone and swaying his hips in the beginning lol, 2 and Corey Feldman's Edgar Frog. Both because they remind you of the 1st one, which are about the only things that do. Needless to say, very glad I only rented this one.

Courage Under Fire
Video: 7.5/10 Audio: 9.5/10 Typical early Fox release, a few immaculate scenes intermixed with heavily compressed noisy scenes. Audio is rock solid however.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio DTS-MA (core only) - 9/10 RoboCop (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 7/10 HD Audio DTS MA (core only) - 7/10 This one would have been an 8 in the video department if it hadn't been for the nasty edge enhancement all the way through. That said, it's not nearly as bad as people claim it is. Yes, it's grainy and a sharpness varries from scene to scene. But a lot of that is original to the film stock and cinematography. Not all of it though, especially the dirt on the print. A good remaster would be nice, but this is still a nice upgrade from my old Criterion DVD. |

Just being anamorphic is a good start. I never saw any of the DVD versions after the Criterion, but the MGM one is probably from the same Robocop master as the blu-ray is.
Natural Born Killers (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio Dolby TrueHD 5.1 - 9/10 A great release from Warner. Yes, the source material is all over the place, including some originally SD. But it's all faithfully presented as it should look. The lossless track is great at reproducing the subtleties of the soundtrack. All and all a great disc from Warner. The 3d "pop" crowd won't be impressed, but that's not the way this film is supposed to look. |

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD
VIDEO: 8/10 AUDIO(DTS-HDMA):8/10 Took a bit to get going but by the last 3rd of the movie does everything come together. Both movie wise and audio really starts to shine.

I found the picture over saturated for the indoor scenes but it did shine for all the outdoor ones. It wasn't bad but from reviews i read and past blu-ray movie viewings. I was expecting a lot more i guess.

Shall We Dance? (2004) (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10 HD Audio LPCM - 9/10 This is the third time I've had to endure this picture (twice in SD) & the movie doesn't get any better in HD, that said it is a very nice video & audio upgrade which exceeded my expectations. There are a few instances of edge enhancement so I couldn't give this one a 10/10 but everything else is flawless. The LPCM track just trumps over the Lossy track. Dynamic range is very good & surrounds get a work out during musical numbers. My only gripe with this audio transfer was dialog didn't come off as clear as I expected.. minor distortion in the center channel. Its so minimal though (almost not worthy of bringing it up) so I doubt most would catch it & even if you do, it isn't distracting from the film. |
