Wow, I watched three HD-DVD's today, despite popular opinion being that my player is little more than a doorstop now. Best doorstop I ever bought.

The Untouchables (HD-DVD)
HD Video - 7/10
HD Audio DTS-HD - 8/10

Land of the Dead (HD-DVD)
HD Video - 8.5/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 - 8/10

Very good movie with a top knotch transfer, took me by suprise. Audio would have gotten 10/10 but I noticed some digital distortion on the dialog. I hear that on quite a few movies even high profile releases, but usually for maybe one line of dialog. This distortion happened in almost every conversation in the movie. Never makes dialog hard to make out, just an annoyance.

The Poseidon Adventure (2005) (Blu-Ray)

The Recruit (2003) (Blu-Ray)

Signs (2002) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 9/10
HD Audio LPCM - 10/10

Signs & the The Recruit would be near reference quality if it weren't for all the DNR applied. Some very minor print damage on both releases as well as EE. No complaints about the audio, both titles make good use of all speakers & dialog is clean throughout with no distortion.

The Poseidon Adventure (2005) isn't much to look at but I just wanted to point out that the audio on this one was near reference. Minimal distortion throughout the center channel unfortunately... but a strong lossy dts track none the less. Had my walls shaking.

Be Kind Rewind (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio DTS-HD MA (core only) - 9/10

The Invasion (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby TrueHD 5.1 - 9/10

Stargate (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 7/10
HD Audio DTS-HD - 8/10

This one is kind of hard to rate on the video, as the thing is all over the place in quality. It almost looks like some scenes were taken from lesser masters with horrible print damage. I also noticed some nasty artifacting in one spot, so I had to knock it points for that.

Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Tour (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio DTS-HD MA (core only) - 8/10

Believe it or not, the 3d actually works pretty well on this one. Normally I'm not a fan of anaglyph 3d. I actually caught part of the concert when Disney channel ran it in 3d in SD over cable. It didn't look very good then and the 3d barely showed up. I don't know if it's the combination of improved sharpness and color on the HD version, but the 3d does really pop on the disc, and even the color isn't too bad with the red/blue. Yeah, it's not as good as polarized, but it looks surprisingly good.

Both the HD DVD & BD have an excellent soundtrack as well as PQ.

Face/Off (1997) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 9/10
HD Audio dts - Reference

No noticeable differences in the PQ from proper sitting distances however both still have some heavy DNR in a few spots. Both tracks are reference.

Next (2007) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10
HD Audio LPCM - 9/10

It was tough to notice the difference between 1.5mbps & the TrueHD track also found on the HD DVD. The DD+ is better than the 640kbps found on the BD but both lossless tracks are par. The BIGGEST issue however I had with the HD DVD release is gone on the BD entirely. No video stutter.

Be Kind Rewind (2008) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio dts-HDMA - 9/10

Excellent little movie, I knew it would be good having Chitwe... the bad guy from Serenity in it . You just have to love a movie about honor over money.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

VIDEO: 9/10
AUDIO(7.1 TrueHD): Reference

Ah finally the move in the proper format. Nice looking video but not Corpse Bride reference quality. I guess age and film stock will do that. Still even with a few (and do mean very few) dirt specks its still a pretty video to show off. The big winner here is the audio with its very rich/constantly active sound. Gives great life into Danny Elfman's amazing musicals score/songs in the movie. Well worth a purchase

Can't say I found a single thing wrong with the picture on this one. Nice and clear and free from any nasties. Nice to see discs done right for once. The audio is pretty impressive in the Vegas scenes as well.

Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Season 1 (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 8/10
Audio Dolby Digital 5.1 - 7/10

Whomever mixed this show should be shot. Or maybe they're just deaf. I don't think lossless would save this one. The video is clearly low budget television HD, but it still looks pretty nice. Unfortunately, some artifacts reared their ugly heads in a few episodes, so I had to knock down the rating.

I disagree due to price. $39.99 now is rape for this title when the newer Corpse Bride was $29.99 over a year ago. On top of that, you know for a fact an ultimate edition double-dip with the full-color IMAX 3D version will be included (for Blu-ray profile 4.0 or whatever) within the next 3-4 years.

So, until I can get it under $20 street, I'm passing on this one.

Well for any fan of the movie it is. Plus i got it for an ok price thanks to 25% off at BlockBuster on the Saturday. Sure i will probably re-buy the 3D version when/if it is release but what other movies can you say wont be double dip in the future anyways. Its already happening on movie no older then 2 years old. So i will enjoy the 3-4 years i have now

I paid $27.95 but even that I think is a bit to much.

All of these movies got slammed pretty hard in terms of how good the movie was. Were they as mediocre as I have heard?

I enjoyed 27 Dresses as a romantic comedy, because I am a sap for that genre of movies. The other two were forgettable. Rumor Has It... had a completely unsympathetic character (Aniston) that I just gave up on after 15 minutes of watching the movie. One Missed Call had potential, but fell into the hackneyed plot traps that plague thrillers nowadays.

I will probably buy 27 Dresses if it is in a bogo sale. The other two won't even get on my bargain bin list.

Same, I was actually a bit surprised how good a film it was.. completely through me off guard.

One to Avoid err One Missed Call is a straight to vid mess. Maybe it had a run in theaters & if it did, I feel sorry for those people.

The Longest Day (1962) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 7/10
HD Audio dts-HDMA - 8/10

Patton (1970) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 8/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 7/10
HD Audio dts-HDMA - 8/10

The Sand Pebbles (1966) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 7/10
HD Audio dts-HDMA - 9/10

Audio is pretty lacking on all 3. Dated & sometimes distorted. The Longest Day is the best looking of the bunch but I had to knock down a perfect rating cause of unnecessary DNR. Patton is in the same boat as well as contrast issues & print damage. No grain removal at all on The Sand Pebbles but maybe thats not a good thing sinse this is MPEG-2 encoded. Still acceptable PQ & this one is the strongest in the audio department.

Batman: The Movie (1966) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 7/10
HD Audio dts-HDMA - 8/10

One to Avoid unless you are a fan & if so, I feel sorry for ya.

Batman Begins (2005) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 10/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby TrueHD - 10/10

Side by side with the HD DVD version the BD does appear a little bit more soft but not enough of a difference to warrant a lower rating imo. The TrueHD track sounds a bit different on this as well but I think its a mixing issue. All the bass is there that the HD DVD had, but this one has the treble kicked up a notch.
The IMAX prologue looks sweet, even sounded good with just a lossy mix. I hope The Dark Knight on BD has the entire film like this.

Batman: Gotham Knight (2008) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10

Some bad compression coupled with intentional grain isn't nice so at least that issue with disc only lasts a few minutes. A minor complaint I had near the beginning was contrast fluctuations. Other than that (I know it sounds bad, but its not THAT bad) I enjoyed the transfer & felt this might have benefited from a TrueHD track.

Starship Troopers (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 9/10
HD Audio Dolby TrueHD 5.1 - 8/10

So close, but some EE in a few scenes knocks it down a bit. Lots of booms and surrounds, though a bit thin in quality. I'd forgotten how good this film is. And creepily clairvoyant in what went down with 9/11 and Iraq. I need to get Verhoeven to make a film where I win the lottery.

Heroes Season Two (Blu-Ray)
HD Video - 8/10
HD Audio DTS-HD MA (core only) - 8/10

Unfortunately this suffers a bit from the lower budget hd often used for television. It's a bit soft. I debated if I should knock points down for that since it's a issue with the source and not the disc itself. My gut says 8 is a good number to go with. The audio is only average.

Really? I have the UK import and the PQ is very lackluster for the most part. I wonder how it compares to the domestic release.

Don't know, I've never seen the UK import. But aside from a tad edge enhancement, it looked pretty much the way it did in the theater.

I Netflixed the domestic Starship Trooper and compared it to the one from the UK, despite UK being VC-1 and the US being AVC, they seem to be identicle. The PQ is better than I remember though, I forgot the last time I watched was on the inferior 720p Sony projector.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory

Video: 9.5/10
Audio: 8/10

Well given the fact that this one was missing lossless audio I wasn't expecting much from the transfer, but it's cleaned up quite nicely! Solid black levels, lots of fine object detail and the "3D pop" happens frequently. Too bad the audio is indeed phoned in(standard DD), dialog is always clear, but the mix is front heavy, plus gunshots and explosions have no balls to them.
