Kill Bill: Volume One

Video: 9/10
Audio: 10/10

When BD first came about and KB was pictured in the upcoming releases, I vowed not to watch them until HD came about, well 2 years later, I finally satiated my appetite today back to back! Volume One looks incredible, there is a fine layer of quite intentional grain throughout which keeps it from being pure 10/10 reference material. However it is how it looked theatrically, so it's always going to be there. The audio is just outta sight, I watched these LOUD, and they are so clear it brings a tear to the eye at times!

Kill Bill: Volume Two

Video: 9.5/10
Audio: 10/10

The layer of grain is gone, so this one is pretty much reference, save for a few soft shots here and there. Same on the audio. God I love these movies!

What keeps it from being "reference material" (whatever that means) if it looks exactly as it's supposed to?

"reference material" = Something that can't look better.

That it true, but while Kill Bill can't look better, I wouldn't use it show of the system visually, so for me not "reference" material.

You might be experiencing a flag issue happening with your setup. Some reported on the AVS Forum with this and early Iron Man reviews

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9.5/10
HD LPCM: 9.5/10

I think that this was a great transfer. I compared it to the dvd version, and OMG, it is night and day difference. I saw the removal of the pervasive edge enhancement, and details and colors pop. The lossless track is drool worthy.

The Gameplan (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 9.5/10
HD LPCM: 9/10

I liked this, surpisingly.

The Mist (Color version)

Video: 8.9/10
Audio: 10/10

The presentation here is good, but soft throughout. I get the impression this is intended, but I can't be sure. The audio simply rocks, dialogs always clear, plenty of low end bass and the surrounds are well utilized.

Forbidden Kingdom

Video: 10/10
Audio: 9/10

The video here is simply perfect. Audio wise, the fights lack a bit of punch(pun intended), and dialog is occasionally obscured by the score. As for the movie... well you throw Lord of the Rings, Wizard of Oz, Drunken master, Once Upon a Time in China, and a Shia Leboff clone into a blender, and this is what you get. Great? Hell no. Good? Meh. Bad? Not really. Basically lots of Chan and Li action + 1st class HD material = buy.

88 Minutes

What a piece of crap this movie was, glad I only rented it. The video while sharp has lousy contrast and inconsistent black levels, audio is decent.

Alexander: The Final Cut

Video: 9/10
Audio: 8/10

Considering how bad the SD DVD looked(the battles were more compression artifacts than images), this is a massive improvement! However the standard DD audio is subpar, while dialog is always quite clear, it's completly lacking in balls during heavy battle scenes. Also Netflixed this, I might buy it one day if they ever release it with better audio.

This one is kind of all over the place videowise, and since it had no theatrical release, it's hard to say what's a stylstic choice and what's a bad transfer. So I'll give it a range between 7 and 9, depending on the segment.

Sublime (Blu-ray)

Not impressed with this movie at all. Boring, with little payoff at the end. I wish I had stopped watching it when I wanted to at 30 minutes in. I didn't get any more satisfaction by finishing it. That and the transfere was terrible, with dirt spots and dvd picture quality in it.

Doomsday (Blu-ray)

I was impressed with this movie. It kind of had a "Escape from New York" feel to it. Universal did a superb job with this one.

Has anyone watched The Godfather series? I'd like to know what the video is like. After the dismal transfer released in the box set in 2001, I am hopeful but hesitant about the blu ray.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (Canadian exclusive)

Video: 9/10
Audio: 8/10

Yeah for some reason this only came out in Canada, and is still available from Amazon.ca. The improvement over the previous DVD incarnations is staggering, Freddy is much more visible in the darker scenes(primitivness of the make up is revealed consequently lol). Some on AVS claim there is a lot DNR going on in the transfer, which I'm happy to report is not the case(this was never an overly grainy film). There are some close ups which are questionable, but I think it boils down to film stock combined with the fact these are all smooth faced kids.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio is quite solid, but really not much of an improvement over the 5.1 track on the SD DVD, which I always thought was very good anyway. No the main complaint here, is that there are audio elements missing, the zingers on sock scenes. Like for example when Rod jumps out of the Bushes to grab Nancy, it's just not there. Hopefully the eventual Domestic release will fix that. Otherwise I love this movie, very happy to have it in HD! Now if we can just get the other 6 plus Freddy V.S Jason!
