LADY IN THE WATER (HD-DVD)
VIDEO: 7/10 (very soft looking) AUDIO (Dolby TrueHD): 7/10 (lots of soft/low dialog, but great for action scenes)

Clerks II (HD-DVD)
Video (AVC MPEG-4): 9/10 This transfer was a bit odd. All of the color issues from the SD transfer have been fixed and fine image detail is excellent. However, I did notice that a number of scenes were a tad dark. For example, Silent Bob’s dark green jacket looks black in several scenes. There were also a few instances of video noise. This is still an excellent transfer and as true to the original print as we're likely to see. Audio (TrueHD): 9/10 The THD is kind of wasted on a film like this, but it’s nice to know that we’re getting the full soundtrack. The only issue I had was that the LFE seems a bit too aggressive during the music scenes. Also, like the other Weinstein releases, this one is mastered low, so you’ll need to crank it up.

Unforgiven (HD-DVD) - An amazing film, and the transfer was excellent. Not a 10 out of 10 since there was some minor edge enhancement, but still an excellent transfer. I don't feel comfortable attaching numbers yet.

Video: 8/10 I’m going to slightly disagree with dkny75 on this one. The transfer is good, but it’s not on par with the other titles in Weinstein’s second wave. A good bit of the film looks like a high-bitrate SD-DVD. There are some stunning scenes, but they’re few and far between. After watching "The Matador" and "Clerks II," I was just expecting more. Audio (DD+): 9/10 I guess we're just not gonna agree on this title, dkny75. I thought the audio was just fine. Nice surround activity, clear dialogue and good LFE. However, it would have been nice to have a TrueHD track. Other than that, my only issue was the low mastering, which meant I had to crank it up to 11. P.S. I love Lucy Liu in this film! ![]()

Video: 9/10 Audio: 9/10 Excellent reference disc all around. Another DTHD bug though, when I first switched to DTHD I got no sound. I went into the settings and changed digital out to PCM, tried again and got audio from the DTHD track, it played fine from there on. ![]()

The Terminator (BD) - Poorest picture quality of any BD or HD DVD I have watched so far. It's a lot better than SDVD, but pales in comparison to other titles that are nearly as old.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (BD) - This movie on the other hand looks amazing... Lots of crystal clear 3D-like images and an almost flawless print... looks like a brand new movie other than the effects shots. Corpse Bride (BD) - Stunning, but that's a given with a direct from the digital source movie like this. Still... great pq. Mission: Impossible Collection (BD) - All three movies look great in my opinion, but as stated in reviews the newer movies look the best. M:I3 has amazing pq, probably equal to the best BD and HD DVD transfers I have seen in testing. M:I2 looks almost as good but not quite... still a great transfer. The first movie probably needs a new HD master or something, but it looks really good for a 10 year old movie all the same. |

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (HD DVD) - It might be too early for me to give a 10 out of 10 but T3 looks damn amazing. No problems that I noticed, and everything has that 3D pop people love... Just a wow transfer.
The Bourne Supremecy (HD DVD) - Great flick, great picture in HD... The movie doesn't really lend itself to a stunning picture, but when those moments come around it sure does shine. Great facial close-ups and such. Lots of intended grain. |

Miami Vice: Unrated Director's Edition (HD DVD) - I hates this movie when I saw it in theatres, but watching the DC on DVD I loved it. Whether the DC makes that much difference (unlikely) or it was just "one of those things" I don't know. Watching it a third time I loved the movie even more. The PQ is amazing, though the style of the movie makes a lot of scenes really grainy or even completely muddy. That's the intent of the source material though, and 80% of the movie looks flawless.

This is the 25th title I've viewed on my PS3 & I finally got some glitches.
No where near as bad as the Samsung thou. The Picture frooze so I pressed the display button, notta. A few seconds later, hit the play button & the film played back norm for a few minutes than the Picture frooze again. Being a nervious nelly, I took the disc out to look for scratches. Nope, no marks of any kind on the disc so loaded the disc back up & the film played back flawlessly afterwards. Before I put the disc in, I downloaded firmware 1.5 That better not be the cause. Now I have another problem or inconvenience. I think my Sony lamp is dying. The picture's contrast is starting to fluctuate. Bright/Dark. I don't know if this is one of the symptoms of a dying lamp or not. I have had the Sony going now for almost 3 years. ![]() Kung Fu Hustle (2004) (Blu-Ray) HD Video - 9/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10 HD Audio LPCM - 10/10 |

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (BD) - Not a very impressive picture, but also not a bad one... it's certainly HD, but it's just kind of there. Probably an MPEG/BD25 problem. Either way it looks really nice in places, and all around better than a regular DVD. Most of the movie sucks though, but I already knew that.
Clerks II (HD DVD) - I'd like to tell you how this looked and how much I liked the movie, but it WON'T FREAKING PLAY ON THE 360 DRIVE. I'm told I need an update from MS, but I'm not on broadband at the moment because I just moved. |

Black Rain
Video: 10/10 Audio(DD+ EX): 9/10 WOW! Since the original DVD release was little more than a laserdisc transfer, this is a most impressive release. It's the 1st catalog release I'd recommend as a reference disc. Maybe the most dramatic restoration since the Star Wars trilogy on DVD! The night exteriors are so clear and yes, three dimensional they'll make you cry. The audio is very nice as well(it says it's DD+ EX), bass deep and tight, dialog is extremly clear and there's even occasional surround usage. This is the most justified upgrade I've yet made to an older film on HD-DVD! One weird thing about Paramount HD-DVDs, and this has only really happened with their releases(with exception to Bourne Supremacy). Sometimes, it's like the disc starts out on the wrong beat, and you get a skip about every 30 seconds, this happened with Black Rain. Easy fix, just eject the disc(verify it's flawlessness), start over and it plays perfectly. Minor annoyance.

I think I'll pick up Black Rain with all these awesome reviews...
Alien Vs. Predator (BD) - Total refference quality, through and through. Some grain in some shots, the highdefdigest review says it's related to the film method, and I believe them, 'cause everything else looks perfect. Tons of cool 3D-like images and the ending scene was amazing, with the... well... you know... running... and stuff. Anyway, great transfer of a flick I enjoy as mindless fun, even though it is pretty insulting to Alien and Aliens quality wise. |

Superman: The Movie (Blu-ray)
It was not incredibly impressive, but steps above dvd. I still noticed film grain, but perhaps that was more due to the master than the encoding, which was vc-1. The sound was improved from the dvd as well. Still, not as high def as I would have liked. HD Video - 8/10 HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10

Goodfellas (BD) - Great looking disc... I read mixed reviews on it so I was very surprised to see such a great transfer. It looks great for a 15 year old movie, with supreme clarity and 3D depth. Warner really knows what they're doing with these new formats.
Stargate (BD) - Another good looking disc, though it has several flaws. The most obvious is an authoring problem with the disc which removes the subtitles for the alien language... big whoopsie there. If you turn on english titles it has them, but what a pain. I'll be emailing Lionsgate about it. Picture wise there's some grainy shots, mostly dark interiors... most of the movie looks perfectly clear and pristine though, so props for that. Without the subtitle problem and a few messy night shots it would be an excellent disc. |

Sleepy Hollow (BD) - Wow, the way this film is meant to look makes a real evaluation of the BD almost impossible. The film is so drained of color and so intentionally muddy and grainy that you have to look hard for HD detail, but it is there. On many closeups and special effects shots the detail is amazing and the picture really crisp... the end shot of New York is an example, as is the many closeups of cardinals and other birds and things. All in all I would give the BD high marks, but qualify that by saying it's not a film in which HD really does much, if that makes sense.
Amazing movie though, one of my absolute faves, and the only movie I own a real theatrical poster of. Peter Bracke's review on highdefdigest is insulting. |

King Kong (HD DVD) - Probably the best HD picture I have seen... the whole movie is perfect, pretty much. Colors are amazing as well.
Not a fan of the film at all though. I'll keep the disc for showing off the format, since it was free anyway. |

Superman: The Movie (BD) - I've read iffy comments on the HD transfer of this movie, but I thought it looked absolutely great. Colors were amazing, detail was impressive... it was soft, but that was intended. Great transfer.

The Matador (2005)
HD Video - Reference HD Audio Dolby Digital Plus - 8/10 The Matador is the 4th Weinstein title I’ve seen now & the video transfer is flawless on this one. If Weinstein decides to continue to use AVC as their codec for future titles that’s fine by me. No compression artifacts, no noise, macro, grain, edge enhancement etc. Colors never bleed, skin tones are accurate & blacks are rock solid throughout. I have to say I didn’t expect this good a video presentation. Like the Paramount release, Sahara, The Matador PQ leaps off the screen & gives an impressive three dimensional look throughout the entire runtime. The dolby digital plus track is mainly front heavy with crisp & clear dialog throughout that never gets washed away from the subtle surround effects. This track is however not a groundbreaking lossless soundtrack & the sonic appeal leans more towards a typical well encoded standard dolby digital mix. Overall, I agree with most reviewers & others who have seen this disc that it ranks among the best Warner, Universal & Paramount transfers out now to date & I look forward to seeing more high-def transfers from the Weinstein Company in the future for HD DVD! ![]() |
