Miami Vice HD DVD (Universal)

video: 9.5/10
perfect representation of the director's intentions for grain and off color skies at night. brilliant, clear day time shots.
audio: 7.0/10
great gun sounds in the shootout. the surrounds just seemed to be on, then off then on then off. kind of a mixed bag sound track.
film : 5/10
Barely comprehensible plot and character motivation, disjointed script that only the characters seemed to be able to follow as they lurched and shot their way through it.

King Kong HD-DVD Universal

Video 11/10
yes, 11 out of 10. That luscious 3Dpop, mmm mmm mmm colors, ultra detail that I didn't know my proj could produce. and this was only in 1080i. 1080p might kill me. Will Universal ever disappoint us with a transfer?
Sound 9.5/10
a sound track to match the video quality.

I bought this a long time ago, and just now got around to watching it, WOW! This is a reference disc all around, the image has that 3D pop to it constantly, and the colors are amazingly lush and vivid. Nary a flaw could I detect, and the audio was very satisfying as well, very clear and highly bombastic!

Casanova (2005) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - Reference
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10
HD Audio LPCM - 9/10

Rocky (1976) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 7/10
HD Audio dts - 8/10

The BD is an improvement over the standard-def version but age has unfortunately caught up to Rocky. The good news is most of the film is crisp & clear & has that 3D pop to it. Overall color & detail & sharpness shine on this transfer with minimal artifacting. It is clear that the worst looking scenes are from the source which I guess could be called a good thing however I somewhat had "restoration" expectations from this classic that were no where to be found. There are some scenes that look horrible with lots of grain & noise, colors washed away, but thankfully they do not take up much of the film's runtime. The dts audio at first sounded like a massive improvement but as the film progressed I noticed a few audible flaws. Again, I think this directly from the source as well. Surrounds are used mainly during Rocky's training & main event fight while the rest of the audio is front heavy. I did pick up on the center channel sounding like mono at one point. I didn't listen to the mono track which is included for die-hard fans. All in all, I think this is the best we will see & hear Rocky on the BD format until MGM goes back & spends more mula for a better restoration.. in the meantime, I do recommend this disc for fans only.

Superman II: Richard Donner Cut (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 8/10
HD Audio DD: 7/10

I thought the film was not as good as the Lester version only because the ending made no sense at all. The transfer was soft, but that was the style I suppose. Some grain and noise was seen in the beginning and certain scenes, but overall a very clear picture. The sound was more front heavy and didn't give a lot of surround effects. It's worth renting, but I want to see the old version on BD instead.

The PS3 is VERY FREAKIN SENSITIVE

I got some more glitches & I now know they were all software related. Basically the picture will freeze, the audio will dropout & than resume 10 or so seconds later. Well with Glory Road, this happened not once, not twice, but 10 freakin times.

I still watched all of the film throughout these gltiches & than took the disc out. There was what looked like a few scuff marks & scratches on the disc. I wiped those away & re-watched Glory Road with this many glitches the second time............................................... 0.

From now on, I gotta make sure every disc is so clean & shiney it will blind a man on the moon before putting it into the PS3. Thankfully, BD discs are easier to clean than DVDs

Glory Road (2006) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 10/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10
HD Audio LPCM - 10/10

The Tailor of Panama (2001) (Blu-Ray)

HD Video - 8/10
HD Audio Dolby Digital - 8/10
HD Audio LPCM - 8/10

Gee, another fine MPEG-2 transfer.. anything less would be uncivilized.
Not really, its just a brand new film & the source must be in perfect condition.

Total Recall (Blu-ray)

HD Video: 6/10
dts-HD: 8/10

The film had lots of grain in it, and didn't compare to other discs I have seen. Also, there were some areas that seemed to shimmer. It's one of the worst transfers I've seen, and I wouldn't recommend it. The audio was strong, but nothing spectacular, thought it was done well.

I might add that I have yet to experience a glitch on my ps3.

I got this from Netflix, good movie, so so transfer. It's definitly HD, but a bit on the soft side, with a fair amount of grain used to create the period look. Being a Netflix disc, it locked up in a two places and refused to go past them. The first time I opted to skip over and miss 30 secs of dialog, the next time happened near the end, so I just turned over to the DVD side. Not a world of difference, but a definite upgrade. Being a dialog driven movie, the audio was unremarkable, but I did strain to hear dialog occasionally.

I got 3 with Rocky & 10 with Glory Road. I took that disc out & there was a scuff mark that could of been the reason for them pauses because after I wiped the disc clean, I re-watched it & got 0 glitches. Yay!

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE DISC UNDER BRIGHT LIGHT.

You'd think every BD disc would look flawless right? Wrong. I can't tell if this is a firmware update problem, but after my first PS3 firmware update, was the first time I encountered these glitches. 24 different titles played back flawless before I did the update. Now after 3 updates............... I dunno what the PS3 is gonna do. I remember the PS2 had a freaking mind of its own. I had 2 identical copies of Scream, both without marks on the disc. One would play, the other would read, cannot read disc. These firmware updates better not be the cause for these BD glitches.

^ Thanks!

Unlike the Toshiba HD-A1, I guess I should be happy that it resumes after it pauses.

I heard there will be a major upgrade in March...who knows.

Open Season (Blu-ray)

Picture: Creates a whole new standard. I thought Ice Age was perfect, but Open Season is easily 2-3 points higher than Ice Age. Whether it is the original source or the AVC compression, Open Season is a new benchmark that all others should be measured. The detail in the fur of the animals as well as the rock solid backgrounds, the colors of everything on the screen, is just more spectacular than anything else I have ever seen.

Audio: The PCM is great, the songs sound powerful, the voices as clean as it gets, and soem of the action scenes sport great surround usage. But honestly, with picture that is so good it is tough for me to truly evaluate the sound.

I guess there are lots of features, but I dont really care about features anymore. This title shows us what we are in for when Sony does a title correctly.
