Paramount Home Entertainment continues its dual-format next-gen support with another simultaneous release on Blu-ray and HD DVD. Oddly, they continue to use different codecs for the different formats, with the Blu-ray getting the MPEG-2 treatment, and HD DVD getting VC-1. Despite this difference, both transfers come from the same master, are presented in 2.35:1 widescreen and 1080p video, and look identical.

Bracke has already seen both versions and said they are identical.

Yeah, I don't imagine that Failure to Launch has a myriad of fast action scenes that MPEG2 generally has difficulty with nor complex soundscapes that a higher bitrate and likely higher bit resolution (640kbps is generally 16bit while 1.5mbps is generally 24bit when using DD/DD+) would benefit from. Was just remarking based on the specs since Derb owns both formats.

I buy Paramount titles on BD as well as Warner. I fully switched studio support over to BD with a few exceptions from indie studios like Magnolia. If The Host is released on BD, I'll get that title on BD, but as it is right now, it is only scheduled for release on HD DVD.

Basically only Universal & Weinstein now have my support.

Ruined,

The 640 on Failure to Launch doesn't bother me. I've heard a few lionsgate titles where the 640 is actually better than the 1.5 dts. If it was 448, I would still have bought it on BD. As for MPEG-2, it would be nice to have VC-1 on Paramount BDs but Amir has stated Paramount has no interest in the codec. Still, MS is trying to change their mind.

Ordered,

Dreamgirls

"Running With Scissors" my LAST Sony BD title. I've officially began a boycott of Sony Blu Ray. Unless Fox begins again soon I am only buying Disney BD discs.

Yeah, Magnolia seems to be very hush, hush about their release plans. Apparently it was released May 1st. Thanks to dkny75 for pointing out some releases from them for HD DVD, I found The Lost City listed for Blu-Ray as well.

Do you actually have the disc in your hands, or have you just ordered it? HDNet still lists it as coming soon and amazon has a several week wait on both the hd-dvd and blu ray versions.

I've just ordered it. Tony Bennett was another disc which was released but Amazon took forever to get & still isn't even listed on DVDAfn. Are there stores in your area that carry any Magnolia titles?

I don't know, this is the first Magnolia title I've ever actually wanted, so I've never looked. I'll bet Fry's does. I'll pop in there tomorrow and see. Otherwise, guess I'll do the Amazon wait.

Actually I'm not sure if it's any longer, I just know the US version has been digitally censored(blood) in several scenes.
