Not necissarily, it's on a disc by disc basis. In fact most paramount movies are superior on HD-DVD(DD+), Untouchables is an exception.

You don't need to upgrade to a 1080p HD DVD player. Modern 1080p HDTVs have inverse telecine which is able to deinterlace 1080i to 1080p without loss. A 1080i signal has all the information of 1080p signal, it just needs to be reordered.

In fact, its not uncommon for mid- to high-end TVs to actually look better when using 1080i output of an HD player because the TV has a higher quality deinterlacer than the one in the DVD player. Or, they simply look the same.

The only reason you'd have to upgrade is if you are getting an HD DVD player with a video processor (i.e. XA2 Reon) or just want one that is faster than your current 1st gen one.

I've wondered about that. Perhaps there is someone on AVS who has the JVC RS1 with HD-DVD, would be nice to know definitively which is better.

Picked up Hellboy, Resident Evil 2 and Curse of the Golden Flower at the frys sale.

Then the next day my roomate bought Dog Day Afternoon, Closer, Ghost Rider, The fountain and Payback. So you can guess that the 4th here is going to be a blu-ray marathon!

I just checked:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=853127

The bottom line is that 1080i and 1080p60 will likely look the same in this set. The JVC RS1 deinterlaces 1080i to 1080p60 unfortunately meaning it will have the same judder as 1080p60 does; while that means your set would look the same with 1080i and a standard "1080p" hidef player like the Panasonic BD10A, the maximum capabilities of your set will not be taken advantage of. Other sets deinterlace 1080i to 1080p24, unfortunately this isnt one of them. With both your HD-A1 and PS3 it appears there will be no way to avoid motion judder as neither one can output 1080p24 at this point in time.

However, if you feed the JVC 1080p24 (I checked and it supports it) from the HD-A20 or HD-XA2 (coming via firmware upgrade in September), THEN you will be able to take advantage of the JVC's smooth panning. So it looks like with your set you would get benefit with these players due to it supporting 1080p24 but failing to support deinterlacing 1080i to that standard.

Ruined... your an angel.

Good to know the RS1 does support 1080p24, looks like some upgdrades are in the pipeline. However, I may wait, see what happens with gen 3 players. Hopefully there will be a a dual format playing solution by the end of the year, as it would be nice to have 1080p24 for Blu Ray and HD-DVD.

For BD, PS3 may add 1080p24 at some point in the future though it hasn't been announced nor is it guaranteed.

That HD-A20 price of $319 on Amazon must be mighty tempting, tho

I wouldn't be suprised if this happens(likely very soon to respond to Toshibas recent announcement of it), as it seems Sony is still treating this as the forerunner entry player.

Mainly because it is. The one player with advanced audio codecs, 1.3 hdmi, nice upscaling, and constant improvements (no worries about bd-java, bd-live). You didn't make a bad choice to get the ps3 if you want a futureproof player. Oh, and Motorstorm is tons of fun too.

Dammit, I knew this would happen.

Now that I've bought my first BD I've been cruising around the 'net for a week or so looking at BD players and their prices much more than before.

There's still time, I might consider it if the reviews for it change my mind.

The HD DVD-exclusive feature most seem excited about is being able to watch the "Bluescreen" effects (watching the actors act without the CG effects) in a PiP window while watching the main feature at the same time. Gives you a feel of what the actors really have to work with. There are also some others like a game included and some other stuff, and of course you get the standard DVD version on the flipside so you can put it on your media server and/or watch anywhere.

But since the A/V stream is the same as the BD, reviews of the A/V quality should be identical for the two.

Yep, I am on the fence with this title as well. Through the entire runtime of the film ya can see a PIP of all CGI background/effects removed.

Lionsgate's Terminator 2 is now my second Blu-ray purchase, the Spidey 3 BD is a freebie. Since I have editions of the film spanning multiple formats and the fact it's the theatrical version with no forced subtitles (unlike the first disc of Studio Canal's HD DVD set, which I own as well), I figured $12 sealed isn't bad. Hopefully the studio will treat the film properly like they should have in the first place in the future. The current BD has "rush release" stamped all over it.

No BD player whatsoever yet.

I had a splurge yesterday on some more:

was quite surprised. Rocky Balboa was the best sequal of the lot. Exceed my expectations. Bit grainy in some night scenes though which was disappointing.
