TVLand runs the old version, not the remastered one. None of the local stations run the remastered version in HD as Paramount did not offer it in HD. Until the HD-DVD comes out, the only way to see it in HD is if you download it with the Xbox.

It is big, make no mistake about it. For one thing, since the only SD DVD version of the remastered episodes being released on DVD is the combo version, that means every Trek fan who hasn't gotten into HD yet is going to have to buy this HD-DVD/DVD combo set. So if the sales numbers for this set get counted for HD-DVD, which it will, sales should be huge. The consumer base for SD DVD is way bigger than either of the HD formats.

That's my only complaint about this release - the dreaded combo. I haven't seen every remastered episode, only some of them. I do like the remastered versions better. Like others have said, the new f/x aren't in your face. There subtle and tried to stay true to the original shots, like what was done with ST:TMP. They even used the same camera angles. I have yet to buy the TOS on video/dvd and after hearing about the remastered versions, I've been holding off until now. So this set will be mine! One quick question about the remastered TOS. Did they only redo the f/x for the space shots or everything (space, phasers, etc.)? Any word about the films?

Thanks Dugpa. Yeah, I definately prefer the remastered versions. If only we were getting the films too.

Well that's why you have the original dvd set to watch. Truth be told part of the reason they did new effects shots is because the original ones had to be printed over and over in layers to get everything in the shot, which pulled the quality down a lot. If they blew them up to HD, they'd look pretty fuzzy and grainy. Considering how much people here bitch about a disc if it doesn't "pop" like their football games they're used to watching, I can see why for the HD transfers CBS would want to save themselves the grief and just redo them.

I'm kinda torn on this. I love the idea of TOS coming to HD but taking a closer look at the photos above, I dunno. The 'look' of the Enterprise seems off to me. The saucer section is darker, almost too grey compared to the original look. The shots of the ship firing it's phasers - take another look. To me, the HD version lost some of the intricate details under the saucer.
I can see Taxi's point in this regard yet I know damn well I'm going to buy it anyway. EDITED: When is this going to be available for preorder on Amazon? Anyone know? Last edited by Iguana Man : 07-28-2007 at 03:29 PM. Reason: Question added |

I just went over to startrek.com and checked out all their comparison shots. Many, and I mean many of them look fantastic. I understand the lighting aspect and all, but one shot of the top of the ship really threw me. It looked so smooth and grey and I dunno. Overall I'm happy and like I said, I will own this.
Oh yeah, and some shots while maybe being more color correct now, actually appear less colorfull than the originals. Maybe I too am a purist when taking about this show, but damn....I gonna get me some HD TOS regardless. ![]() |

I think dugpa is right that this is one show where you'd probably get most people complaining about the HD version if they didn't re-do the effects if necessary to get HD quality, especially with the process dugpa mentioned which probably blurred out any additional detail that would have been made possible with a straight up HD transfer of the originals. I guess they could try to emulate the original effects by redoing them from scratch, but why spend all that money when people would likely pay more money for the version with new effects? Plus, emulating the original effects still wouldn't be "authentic" to some ST fans.

I can guarantee this is a HUGE move to making the war one which will favor HD-DVD come November. And, it's right before Xmas.
Blu is gonna be black and blue after this series hits consumers. Yep....I said it first. Sort of. Kind of. Okay...I tried. ![]() |
