Never watched Star Trek...I might consider Blind Buying this too as well, it looks like Paramount went all out, very impressive.

So is this a hybrid HD-DVD/SD-DVD release? Some of the reviews on Amazon lead me to believe that. Also, they say both the new and old visual effects are included. Does that mean the old visual effects are also on the HD-DVD version or just on the SD-DVD version? The reviews are a little confusing. The only thing they all have in common is complaining about the price.

As for the price, Paramount always gouges us on the Trek series, I don't know why this is unexpected to people suddenly. The list price on the original SD DVD sets when they came out were $129.99, and before that Paramount was releasing them two episodes to a disc at a list price of $19.99 (which means the entire three seasons would be $800 at full list price). These people must have short memories as it seems they don't remember being gouged on every other Trek set in the past. |

Stay away from this. It won't be in HD, it'll be SD run though the crappy pre-show projectors they use for ads. Fathom just sends the feed out through the system they use to run the firstlook pre-show stuff. They did this last week with their big showing of Poltergeist. Just ran the dvd through their pre-show system (in the wrong aspect ratio no less). So if you like SD with lots of screendoor effect and mono sound, go ahead and give them your $12.50. Me, I'll wait for the HD-DVD.

I guess it depends on the person who is running the show. At least up here in Canada we run all our shows in 1080i WS on Christie LW25/LW40 projectors. (Cineplex/Galaxy/Famous theaters) Our pre-show is downloaded to some Dell towers onto the HDD and then played out through the RGB connection. So i guess that soem theaters just suck at these setups more then anything

Doesn't matter what you run the projectors at if the source is SD. Those projectors aren't that good at upconversion. And the native resolution of those projects is only 768 anyway. And as I said, they have horrible screendoor effect. They're made for brute force light output, not quality. Also, CineMedia/Fathom only operates in the US, so whatever content you get up there is not the same company.

Why do you think it's going to be in SD?

When you see that preshow crap at the cinema, it's usually shown on these crappy projectors (they may be HD, but they look like ass). I think Dugpa is saying that Fathom shows their "events" on such projectors.

I don't really like "The Menagerie" that much, so I doubt I'll fork out the 12 bucks for this one. But if they say it's going to be in HD, doesn't that mean that it needs to be in HD? Maybe they're not going to use the same projectors that they use for the pre-show ads, which is why it will only be in 300 theaters?

Because every "movie" event they've done so far has been just the dvd run in SD (granted upconvered to 768 by the projector).

If you guys don't believe me, type in halloween fathom events to google and see what kind of fun responses you get. That will give you a good idea of the "quality" presentation they put on. |

Well here's the list of theaters. Hopefully someone here knows of one which can and does show true HD?

All of them use similar projectors and all of them are pretty much 768 for their resolution. So technically all can do HD. But I guarantee the feed Fathom will be sending them will be 480. So it's a moot point what equipment the theaters have, it'll just be upconverting them.
