Star Trek on HD DVD

Missed this little HD DVD tidbit,

That's certainly unexpected, given Paramount's stated support for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. We've already got a call into Paramount to confirm this one way or the other, so stay tuned. Man... this format war is so F-ing stupid, I can't even tell you. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves for putting consumers and enthusiasts through this mess. Anyway, it's a good chat regardless, so thanks to Ron, Parker and the whole crew at HTF for the transcript, and to Kevin Collins as well. Can't fault a guy for doing his job.

Bill Hunt seems a bit in a tizzy that his favorite Blu-Ray format won't be getting Star Trek! Heh.

I totally agree with this quote. The studios are really treating the consumer like crap.

Yeah, I guess that's why a couple of us can't wait to go out and buy HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies every week

We've got new information on Star Trek coming to high-def for you today. The Hollywood Reporter and Home Media Retailing quote CBS Home Entertainment head Ken Ross as saying that Star Trek: The Original Series is going to be released on DVD/HD-DVD Combo format at the end of 2007. "The reason we chose to do that is to give us the ability to make high-definition transfers of the show available to people who don't yet have high-definition players," Ross says in the interview. However the same piece also notes that while a Blu-ray Disc release hasn't yet been scheduled, CBS will support both formats like Paramount does. So, to cut through all the hype, this likely means that while the HD-DVD camp can probably accurately say that The Original Series will be an HD-DVD exclusive in 2007, the release almost certainly won't happen until the very end of the year (simply due to the fact that it's going to take that long to finish at least a season's worth of remastered episodes) and a Blu-ray Disc release probably won't be far behind. Rest assured, we're looking into this further to confirm all the available details

True. But imagine if all the studios supported both formats, we would be buying more than a couple of titles each week.

I wonder if we'll see the movies sooner. Hopefully they're putting the same effort into the films as they are on the TV series.

On the other hand, screw Trek!

Seriously...if you are a Trek fan, you want this and guess what? It sounds like the HD-DVD camp will get it first, and if so....well....there goes the war.

Star Trek will be released on both HD disc formats...straight from the source:

"Paramount Home Entertainment's Vice President of Publicity, Brenda Ciccone, told me [Bill Hunt] last night in no uncertain terms that when the Star Trek feature films (which Paramount specifically controls) are released on disc in high-def, they will each be released on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc, in keeping with Paramount's stated commitment to support both formats. "

And Warner's Poseidon HD DVD is a Combo.

Good to know the movies and TV shows are coming... I wonder if TNG, DS9, and VOY will get HD upgrades like TOS, and if so how many years that will take. I'd like them to pump out Enterprise quickly, since it was shot in HD.

In any event, Trek is a major deal for me (I own everything except Voyager)... I'll buy it on either one when it comes out.

Ruined, knock it off. If you can't deal with the fact that someone might disagree with you, at least keep it off of this forum.

Bill Hunt has done a lot for the DVD community, and I won't have you disparaging him here.

I'd like to know too. The only Star Trek series I've bought so far is TNG, and I've been planning on getting DS9 and TOS soon, but if they are coming out on HD-DVD, then I'll hold off. I just wish I knew how long I'd have to do that for.

I'd probably only get TNG. It was the one that I grew up watching mostly. I remember at first I hated it because it wasn't as good as TOS/the movies were to me, but then I started liking it better than TOS. The movies still hold a place in my heart. But TNG in hd will be awesome!

Honestly I'll probably hold on to my SD DVDs because it's the shows as originally seen. So I don't feel too bad about buying them again (in a way). I'll still probably get VOY on SD DVD soon.

Is there any update on when TOS will be released in HD?

Also, of all the TV series, which would lend itself to HD more as far as being a visual feast?

Well I'd bet the best looking trek film would be Insurrection cause of all the purdy daylight scenes.

First Contact is my fav of the 10 films & it isn't too old, so it should look desent.
