Universal Re-Releasing HD-DVDs as Non-Combos

Quote:
Universal Studios Home Video have announced the US HD DVD release of two titles on 26th June 2007. Previously released as HD DVD Combo versions, Army of Darkness and Unleashed are now being issued as regular, Non-Combo versions with a reduced price tag of $29.98 SRP each.

Both discs will feature the exact same content as the HD DVD sides on their Combo editions, which sadly means Unleashed is devoid of any extras as those were included on the DVD side of the Combo release. Specs follow…

Army of Darkness is presented on a 15GB Single-Layer disc in 1080P 1.85:1 Widescreen with English Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Plus 2.0 and optional English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles. The only extra is the original trailer.

Unleashed is presented on a 15GB Single-Layer disc in 1080P 2.35:1 Widescreen with English Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Plus 2.0 and optional English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles. There are no extras and this is the R-Rated US Theatrical version of the film.

Sigh...

Interesting. Though this is more of a reissuing than a "double dip" per se since Universal will most definitely recycle the same audio/video as the current releases except that it will be put on a cheaper single-sided disc.

Since I am a combo fan, I need to snap up the combos out there of these titles before they vanish!

I wish they issue a voucher or something to let us switch the current combos out. I'd love to get rid of these damn things.

Why? The content is the same and you get the SD version of the film to boot! Why would you want to swap it out for something that has less than what you have now. That makes no sense.

I'm glad I have the combos I do, I sold my SD versions of the films once I go the combos. But I really perfer combos for new release titles and non-combos for catalog titles I most likely own on SD already. So I'm glad to see Universal is moving in the right direction.

Remember? We've talked about this. The aesthetics, the scratches, etc.

The reasons you like the combo discs don’t really apply to me, so I always feel like I’m being forced to pay extra money for something I do not want.

I'm with PH on this. There is twice the chance to scratch or somehow F-up one of the sides. It's a pain in ass figuring out which side to put face down, ok, that's for me only. And what the hell do you mean swap out for something that has less? If it didn't have the SD side it would be cheaper and have EVERYTHING he wants.

Yes, but he's already paid for the combo disc. He's wanting to swap his combo disc, which he already paid more for, for a disc that has less. So in effect he will have paid the price of a combo disc for one that isn't. That seems silly to me. As for figuring out which side to put in, just a hint, but reading the label has been known to work.

This is kinda ashame for the DVD-only folks in reference to Army of Darkness since the DVD-side is the best video presentation of the film on DVD.

But I'd be a happier camper, and that's all that counts.

Ahh, well I was talking about the purchase of a combo disc to begin with which...well...hehehe...I ain't fond of.

As far as reading the label, I'll pull my eyeballs out and send them to ya. Lets see how good you see with them.

(yes...I need glasses)

I'll be watching for them in the mail.
Actually, you don't even need to read the label. They only put the label on one side, the side you put facing up to play the HD version. So if you see a label when you put it in the player, you've got the right side. You don't even need to read it.

Honestly, it's silly the things people complain about. We have movies available to watch in the comfort of our own home with an image quality approaching that of the theater, and people still have to complain about minor silly things like labels/artwork/box art/cases/etc, that have nothing to do with actually watching the film. I suspect no matter if they changed all that people would still find something to bitch about. Someone would complain their reflection is warped a bit when they look at themselves in the disc or something to put their makeup on.

I agree and for people here, of all places, to complain about scratches, etc., surprises me since I would expect people HERE, of all places, to take good care of their discs.

Peace....

Ditto on that. I haven't opened up Fast Times at Ridgemont High or American Werewolf in London yet, so I'm trying to decide if I should just keep them, try to return them, or just put them up on ebay.

This is an interesting turn-around or I am on crack.

Didn't Universal say early this year that they wanted to push more Combos now than ever including catalogs?

They said that and then proceeded a couple weeks later to make the announcement about re-releasing Army of Darkness and Unleashed. Seems they had a change of heart. Only new releases are combos now for them.

Good article and i agree that Combos are indeed killing HD-DVD. Sure i have use the dvd side a very few times over at my friends house and i have been fortunate enough to of had very few if any problems so far with my Combos HD-DVDs. Still i do like my disc art even if its the simple moving of the disc from case to tray (ah memories) We have seen many AVS Forums and cases here where users have skipped the HD-DVD for the Blu-ray just because of them being a combos release. Sure a slight lower price would indeed be nice but if they want to run neck and neck with Blu-ray i think they might want to think about dropping Combos all together. Especially if they will be releasing the cheap players this Holiday season

Since I'm a sucker for disc art i think this is a good move. I hate combo or flipper discs, they always remind me of bootlegs!
