Kubrick High Def before '08

From Thedigitalbits.com

Quote:
Some HD-DVD copies of The Ultimate Matrix Collection (due in stores next Tuesday) will come packaged with a pamphlet promoting the forthcoming high-def release (in both formats) of Blade Runner and a number of Stanley Kubrick films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and the UNRATED Eyes Wide Shut. All are expected before the end of the year.
I have been waiting for a release of Eyes Wide Shut in HD for months, so I won't have long to wait now. Clockwork, Shining, and my personal pick for the best film of all time, 2001, will be happily added to my collection too.

I think the Kubrick films have a big enough demand that they'll get them out. I'm pretty jazzed about this myself, these are the kinds of films I've been waiting for. Now if Universal would just let loose with some of Hitchcock's films life will be peachy keen.

I'm also awaiting Shawshank as well. Wasn't this suppose to be one of the early releases? I think Twister was one of the launch titles and we don't have that one either.

Kubrick fans rejoice! After a year of waiting, Warner Home Video has finally announced the Blu-ray and HD DVD releases of a quartet of the director's most revered classics.

On October 23, Warner will debut remastered special editions of four Kubrick classics: '2001: A Space Odyssey,' 'A Clockwork Orange,' 'The Shining' and 'Eyes Wide Shut.'

The releases are set to debut simultaneously on Blu-ray, HD DVD and standard-def DVD, with each title available separately as a stand-alone release. Currently, the studio has not indicated whether the titles will also be bundled together as a box set collection.

Supplemental details for the four titles have also not yet been revealed, but tech specs on the next-gen versions will include 1080p video transfers and remixed Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio tracks on both the Blu-ray and HD DVD editions.

Retail price is $28.99 a piece for each Kubrick classic.

In anticipation of the full press release with final confirmed details, we've added listings for all four titles to both our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, under October 23. Needless to say, stay tuned!

Yay! Between this and the Tartan Seventh Seal news, I think I need to go change my underwear. F*ck that Matrix and Pirates crap, now we're getting real films!
Your turn Universal, how about releasing a little Hitchcock to top things off?

I'm definately in for The Shining, 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. Didn't really care for Eyes Wide Shut. Don't get me wrong, it's a good film, it's just one of those titles that really wouldn't mulitple viewings.

Let's just hope that the transfers aren't as bad as Caddyshack.

These are brand new transfers that they supposedly put a lot of time into. I think Warner learned it's lesson and is putting more care into titles these days. That said, a film from the 70's is still a film from the 70's. So yes, The Shining will still be grainy because of the film stock it was shot with. Clockwork Orange was on Universal HD a couple months ago and looked pretty good (as far as cable goes), though I don't know if it was the new transfer or not.

Excellent. Should be region free as well. The US version of the Shining is longer than our version, and been dying to see it.

Bout time you guys got EWS how it was meant to be seen.

But the biggest joy of the announcement is A Clockwork Orange!! Kubrick's greatest film!!

Yowza! That is awesome news! I have been holding off buying Eyes Wide Shut for quite a while now on standard DVD waiting for the unrated version to become available. But now knowing that it's going to be out in high def is too cool! Looks like the wait will have been worth it! Also getting 2001 and The Shining.

Isn't Full Metal Jacket being re-released at that time as well? I thought I read something about that somewhere. I'll pick that up as well.

That'll be the only one I'll be getting. I never really cared much for Kubrick. He's quite overrated and mainly loved by pretentious know-it-alls who love talking about how much they know about films.

They're putting out a new dvd version, but so far it seems no love for FMJ in HD beyond the existing disc.

Warner to Re-Issue 'Full Metal Jacket' in New 'Deluxe Edition' Blu-ray, HD DVD
Tue Jul 31, 2007 at 07:55 AM ET

Warner Home Video has confirmed to us that they will be re-issuing the Stanley Kubrick classic 'Full Metal Jacket' in a new "Deluxe Edition" on Blu-ray and HD DVD this October.

'Full Metal Jacket' was initially released on both next-gen formats in 2006, in feature-starved editions that were met with generally tepid reaction from early adopters and reviewers.

When Warner unveiled plans last week for first-ever next-gen special editions of four other Kubrick classics due October 23 -- including 'A Clockwork Orange,' 'The Shining,' 'Eyes Wide Shut' and '2001: A Space Odyssey' -- 'Full Metal Jacket' was originally absent from that list, but as several eagle-eyed readers pointed out to us over the weekend, the studio has quietly added listings for a 'Full Metal Jacket: Deluxe Edition' to its list of press materials for its upcoming Kubrick collection.

The re-issue of 'Jacket' will join the quartet of other Kubrick releases hitting high-def on October 23, though no tech specs were immediately available on what (if any) elements of the release will receive an upgrade.

List price for 'Full Metal Jacket' will match the other Kubrick releases, with a $28.99 MSRP.

Note also that the original standard Blu-ray and HD DVD editions of 'Full Metal Jacket' will now be discontinued.

I remember I saw a special screening of Full Metal Jacket back in 2001 at the local multiplex. The projectionist screwed up and used an anamorphic lens on the projector so we had a 1.66:1 film shown at 2.35:1 on a 1.44:1 IMAX screen.

Fuckin' retards.

More info including specs for each version of the discs and a list of extras:

Quote:
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling, Academy Award-winning achievement (Special Visual Effects) is an allegorical puzzle on the evolution of man and a compelling drama of man vs. machine. Featuring a stunning meld of music and motion, the film was also Oscar® nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke) first visits the prehistoric age-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality.

Using a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc (BD50) and dual-layer HD DVD (HD30) features include:
1080P 2.20:1 Widescreen
English PCM 5.1 Surround (Blu-ray Disc)
English Dolby True HD 5.1 Surround (HD DVD)
English, French and Spanish 5.1 Surround (Dolby Digital on Blu-ray, Dolby Digital Plus on HD DVD)
English, French and Spanish subtitles
Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Stomping, whopping, stealing, singing, tap-dancing, violating. Derby-topped hooligan Alex (Malcolm McDowell) has a good time – at the tragic expense of others. His journey from amoral punk to brainwashed proper citizen and back again forms the dynamic arc of Kubrick’s future-shock vision of Anthony Burgess’ novel. Controversial when first released, the film garnered three Academy Award nominations – Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Its power still entices, shocks and mesmerizes today.

Using a single dual-layer Blu-ray Disc (BD50) and two dual-layer HD DVD discs (HD30s) features include:
1080P 1.66:1 Widescreen
English Dolby True HD 5.1 Surround
English, French and Spanish 5.1 Surround (Dolby Digital on BD, Dolby Digital Plus on HD DVD)
English, French and Spanish subtitles
Commentary by Malcolm McDowell and historian Nick Redman
Theatrical trailer

New featurette: Great Bolshy Yarblockos! Making A Clockwork Orange
Career profile: O Lucky Malcolm!

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Kubrick’s daring and controversial last film is a bracing psychosexual journey through a haunting dreamscape, a riveting suspense tale and a career milestone for stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Cruise plays a doctor who plunges into an erotic foray that threatens his marriage – and may ensnare him in a murder mystery – after his wife’s (Kidman) admission of sexual longings. As the story sweeps from doubt and fear to self-discovery and reconciliation, Kubrick orchestrates it with masterful flourishes. His graceful tracking shots, rich colors and startling images are some
