J6P will LOVE Blu-ray!!

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...eting_Push/720

It appears J6P icon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is supporting Blu-ray. While Michael Imperioli might appeal to some, the Nascar star will be a more prominent spokesman for the format.

Wow! Genius marketing. I am floored! How do they come up with this?

A cheap, tabloid stunt. Sony sink lower and lower.

It's all about aggressive marketing. Can you imagine a big blu-ray symbol on a Nascar, speeding around for hours to millions of watchers? It's instant brand advertising. Genius, indeed!

Except that $500 being the cheapest player will ensure that J6P will buy something else instead. You are talking about people who are used to paying $99 or less for a DVD player

Yes, now. But establishing a brand is all about persistent marketing. Most J6Pers will not be buying hd media for quite a long time (though, I will guess that more than a few spent over a thousand to own hdtv's to see their Nascar races and football games in highdef). Why does Coke continue to advertise, or McDonald's? It's not like people don't know about them. The idea is to perpetuate a brand. Blu-ray is establishing a presence in Blockbusters and Nascar. You don't think that this has an impact?

No, I think both BD and HD DVD have made and will continue to make impacts. I see both formats coexisting. BD is building a brand name, HD DVD already has a brand name in HDTV + DVD.

By the time BD comes down in price to "J6P" level, dual format players will be the norm. In fact, a dual format player will cost a bit more than an HD DVD player to manufacturer but hardware costs will be virtually identical to a BD-Live enabled BD standalone. Unless you are heavily invested in the BD side, there would be no point to not make a dual format player.

Perhaps. But I am expecting you to post the hd-dvd response from Amir or Toshiba pretty soon. Something to the effect of, "This really doesn't matter either. Blockbuster going Blu-ray in stores, and Nascar seeing blu-ray. No big deal."

It really isn't much of a big deal until the players can actually be afforded by the masses. Blu-Ray is building brand name now. It has to do this because Blu-Ray sounds nothing like DVD or HDTV which are commonly recognized terms. HD DVD does not have to do this marketing because it is instantly recognizable and understandable to the consumer.

Therefore, the wise move would be to save the cash reserves until it matters more - when people can go to the store and make that impulse purchase. That simply isn't going to happen with $500 players. This is why you saw an increase in Toshiba advertising when the Father's Day promotion allowed for $299 players - still "expensive" to J6P, but much closer to impulse purchase than the standard prices in stores now. And as a result of that pricing + advertising combo, Toshiba sold as many players in 6 weeks as it previously took them 6 months to sell.

Not quite. HD DVD sounds like it would be "instantly" recognizable and understandable BUT people are already associating "HD" with "Blu-Ray", so Sony's "branding" is working and working well. ganthc's right about this.

Peace...

I'm not J6P, but Nascar coupled with HD, makes me want to buy a VCR.

I am sorry to say it, but the south does not "lead" the country towards technology practices. It follows.

Michael Imperioli is a much better spokesperson as most early adopters have either a strong connection for the Sopranos or at least a passing one. Also, The Sopranos has long been a foundation for HT. I remember an early episode showing Pauly Walnuts stealing DVD players and talking about how great it will be to watch the Godfather on DVD. Also, Tony's purchase of a full on HT played a prominent role in the 4th Season.

I know nothing about Dale Earnhardt and could not care less about what he and NASCAR has to say about HD.

Score one point for HD-DVD.

How so? This doesn't help HD DVD any and gives more exposure to Blu-Ray to those into Nascar.

Quite a sweeping away of a vast percentage of the country. Perhaps people aren't familiar with either format right now. But if Dale Earnhardt, Jr. thinks that Blu-ray is cool and that everyone should get it, there are millions of Earnhardt fans that will jump at the chance to be cool like Dale. If Nascar wasn't a moneymaker and advertising goldmine, you wouldn't see sponsors plastered on ever square inch of his uniform and all over his car.

This is a marketing bonanza for Sony, whether you like Nascar or not. I know I think it's boring, but a lot of my family back in Texas likes it, and more of them are buying hdtv's to be able to watch football and nascar in hd. Getting Earnhardt's endorsement is a big deal.

Y'know I wish we would just stop all of this pointless bickering right now.

People who buy HD DVDs will continue to do so. People who by BDs will continue to do so. There are some who buy both. As much as we want them to have a clear winner, it's more than likely not going to happen now. There's just too much content available for either to end up dead in the water. The only shit thing is that you'll need 2 different players but Combo-players are coming soon and then J6P will really start to make a difference.

All studios will eventually go neutral, Sony and Universal will be the last hold-outs and then everything will be fine. All we have to do right now is be patient and buy what is available for our hardware of choice.

At this point now, we will just have to live with 2 winners.

Shawn

My only wish is that Dick Trickle were still around, so that HE could've endorsed HD-DVD, and this all would be moot.

At this point that feels about right. Dick Trickle set the NASCAR record for the most races without a win. Sounds about right for HD-DVD.
