HiDef Audio face-off: Which would you rather have?
Here is the scenario:
An HD DVD compressionist only has room on a title for a 5.1 track that has ~3.5mbps average bitrate and no more than 5mbps peak. He has to make a decision: Lossless TrueHD 24bit/48khz @3.4mbps ABR *OR* Lossy DTS-HD 24bit/96khz @3mbps CBR. To be fair, some may argue that the DTS-HD track could be considered "Perceptually Lossless" due to its high bitrate. Also, the master itself is 24bit/96khz, so it will need to be downsampled for the lossless track. Which one would YOU prefer the compressionist went with in this hypothetical scenario?

I would rather have the one that's more "cinema-accurate," if that's something the compressionist can accomplish. If the DTS track is going to be pumped-up and over-processed, I want the TrueHD version (or vice versa).
I'm not sure how we can answer this question without knowing more details or having a sound test. ![]()

I chose THD, but I hate that you didn't put PCM down.

PCM takes up too much space even at 16bit/48khz to work in the scenario of the original post and be comparable to these two codecs. And, since TrueHD is bit-for-bit mathematically identical to PCM at equal bit resolution/sampling rate, it would be a redundant choice in terms of quality.

From what little I know of all this stuff, lossless 'should' be better. However, my gut tells me unless heard in a killer setup, the differences would be hard to discern.
I'd love to know how you voted Ruined, but I guess I'll go with both sounding excellent. |

I voted for the DTS because it looked lonely
...now in thinking about things a bit more I would need to hear both side by side to determine what sounded better to me. So, yeah, the "I would go with what sounds best" is probably a more accuarate answer than what I put on the poll.![]()
