And the countdown to Ruined posting about the BD-J features not working in current players has begun...

There will be more than enough stuff to spend boatloads of money on for HD DVD over the holidays, just buy other stuff until Disney goes neutral (they already are on Live Marketplace and they are partial founders of HDi, so you can bet talks are ongoing with the HD DVD camp). They don't have as much vested in Blu-Ray as Sony or Fox, who will be the long holdouts IMO.

Come on, let's face sad facts, Universal will go format neutral before Disney does. It causes me no joy to say it, being a hd-dvd fan, but blu-ray is all but assured to be the winner in the format wat at this point. Universal just hasn't seemed to have gotten the memo yet. Short of giving away a few hd-dvd player to every household, I really don't see what the format can do to overcome the lead blu-ray has now.

I don't know about that. Doesn't Univeral have some sort of relationship with Toshiba? I might be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere at AVS.

Disney is setting up kiosks in shopping malls, around the country, to promote Blu-Ray to soccer moms and their kids - right before Xmas. Not HD in general, but Blu-Ray.

The 5 free Blu-Ray promotion currently going on is a Disney venture.

Disney is also setting up shop in Xbox Live Marketplace (which is a rental format, btw). Yet, they are staying away from HD-DVD, suggesting they have no issues with Microsoft or its software - just the delivery medium.

There's no indication, whatsoever, that Disney is thinking about format neutrality at this time.

If you like Cars, and you want to posses a physical (and legal) copy of it, then your only choice is to buy a Blu-Ray player. Hoping for anything else isn't going to change that.

Hmm. It seems to me that if Blu-Ray gets all the Pixar flicks exclusively, then HD-DVD truly is in trouble. Native Digital transfers direct to 1080i/p?

Or buy the DVD and play it in your hd-dvd player.
There's no incentive for Disney to go format neutral at this point in time. The installed base of players for hd-dvd is no where near that point needed for them to cross over. A studio will only cross over when it gets to the point that they're actually losing lots of money by not releasing in the other format. At the rate things are going, that point will happen for Universal with Blu-ray long before it would for Disney with HD-DVD.

Cars has been playinjg on Starz or Cinemax HD for the last 2 months or so, and it looks exquisite (yes, even in blocky, heavily compressed MPEG-2). There is no way Disney could fuck this transfer up.

I think overall, Disney has been the most reliable studio for transfers out of all of them. Great PQ, and consistent devotion to lossless PCM. Sony has improved greatly, but Disney has turned out great product almost from the get-go. If they decide to put out LOST, Desperate Housewives, etc. on blu-ray as well, that would be a boom for the format. I will probably buy Cars blind, because I never did see it in theaters.

I also agree that it's wishful thinking that Disney would go neutral. This talk was believable last fall, but not right now. And the promotional tours that are being planned are just icing on the cake for Disney's allegiance to the bd format.

Iggy, sub780lime was referring to the awful pun used in the link in the related story. http://www.hollywoodinhighdef.com/blog_detail.php?id=95

I didn't love this film as much as other Pixar releases but I still can't wait to see what it looks like on Blu Ray. Hopefully, the rest of their catalog will be soon to follow.

At the very least, Pixar has some potentially stunning movies to push whatever side they take and yes, that is something to consider in the potential doom & gloom perspective of HD-DVD.

WTF? Hd-DVD needs these movies asap. These are afterall the bread and butter of most jsp wives when plugging their newfound 'add' children in front of the 'tube'.

I'd love to hear your spin on how Disney choosing MS's digital rental distribution somehow equates to them going HD-DVD eventually.

If there is a stalemate, as it appears will be the case and currently predicted by experts, they will essentially be forced to.

Yeah and back in 1998 some "experts" stated that "Divx was an attractive business model that could catch on in time" and that Divx was attacking the rental business so both DVD and Divx could coexist. Basically what I'm saying is trusting these socalled "experts" is fool hearted. There will need to be one format that wins the war for the sake of consumers, more so than Hollywood that's for sure.

Bwhahahahaha, there is the irony of having DIVX compared to hd-dvd. We've heard differently before...

ganthc = hd-dvd zealot? supercutz, you're killing me over here. You need your own comedy show...seriously!!

I read your post, and the implication is just as divx was able to coexist with dvd, Ruined feels that hd-dvd can coexist with blu-ray. With blu-ray the leader right now, the catching up is on the part of hd-dvd, just like with divx. I think that it's funny, because Ruined has many times made the comparison between blu-ray and divx. Just thought there was irony there...
