Problems With Blu-ray's BD-J Spec Causes Headaches For Early Adopters

Informative video for HD DVD owners on slow speeds of BD-J even after the movie has loaded

Video of Sony BDP-S1 (same as Sony BDP-S300) and BD-J playback

Makes the HD-A1 look like a speed demon

That was with the old quick fix 1.6 firmware. 2.0, which came out about a week and a half later, loads the disc in about one minute and Liar's Dice plays fine.

So, after the player is on and ready to go, it still takes a full minute to load this disc?

The PS3 still takes a bit to load the disk, although not nearly as bad as the player shown. I had to roll my eyes when I first saw the spinning key. I'm just trying to watch a movie, not load a game, which sadly Pirates has a longer load time than many "real" games.

Well, the player shown was a Blu-Ray standalone - the Sony BDP-S1 (same thing as Sony BDP-S300). While I'm sure PS3 fares better, I think it is worth demonstrating this because a lot of people want a real standalone player and not a game console!

ZOMG!! A gen-1 player taking a minute to load a disc??? How terrible!! How long does it take the HD-A1 to load discs?? Hmmm...

What's the point in these threads constantly having a go at Sony/Blu Ray/anything not MS or HD-DVD branded? It's really getting tiresome... Ruined, i know you're like, the most avid MS/HD-DVD fan in the history of the Universe, but Christ, can't you at least take a day off?

This is not just a gen1 player, but also a gen2 player - the gen2 Sony BDP-S300 is identical to this one and hence fares the same as the player in this movie. This is also the player that most BD folks are pushing as the good one to get at this point in time.

HD-A1 takes about 20-25 seconds to load a disc. And, once a disc is loaded the features work near instantly unlike the BD standalone shown here which has loading times even after the disc has started.

However, the current model HD-A2 takes less than 10 seconds on even the most feature-laden discs. It is fair to compare the HD-A2 to the player in the movie, because the Sony BDP-S300 is identical to the player in the movie and is the current player the HD-A2 is competing with.

Oh please, I could resurrect a number of threads that dealt with the problems that hd-dvd had with u-control, and the excuses about discs not being the right thickness. Having a known spec didn't make the hd-dvd experience any better for a lot of users. Glitches anyone?

And for what it's worth, the ps3 is just shown once again as being the best bd player out there. It also blows away my hd-a2 as a highdef player as well. The hd-a2 can't toggle between audio tracks, it can't do frame-by-frame backwards (only forwards), it's not hdmi 1.3, it doesn't show me bitrates for audio and video. I could go on and on. Doesn't mean that the hd-a2 is a sucky player. I can still play hd-dvd movies on it. Same can be said for bd players and the POTC movies. The firmware update allows for that.

Speaking of which, The HD-XA2 takes LONGER to navigate through DVD menus than the PS3.

Just watched the vid.

Why does this person have the XA2 player turned ON?

HDMI switching from any display can cause HDMI handshaking issues. Hmm.. The 1.6 firmware, I got that part & the slow ass load times + the game actually froze.

Hmm..

I guess I don't get why anyone would want a BD standalone in the first place. Everyone knows (Or should) that the PS3 "bests" even the Pioneer Elite. The response time from BD remote to actual operation has to be spot on. If it wasn't than all Ps3 games wouldn't even be playable & the PS3 would of died last year. Thanks Blutooth

Ruined,

Get some real #'s on HD DVD's 1st-gen & 2nd-gen please.

"HD-A1 takes about 20-25 seconds to load a disc"

Actually, the HD-A1 takes 10-15 seconds to get an image once you press "power on" than another 40-45 seconds to get an image.

"However, the current model HD-A2 takes less than 10 seconds on even the most feature-laden discs"

Talk about pimpin'

PH,

"I love your avatar."

That was a good one.

Analog outs for one. Also, I hate slot loaders. They're nothing but trouble.

No worries with BDs cause of the coating, but I am a little skeptical about DVDs.

Analogs will be a thing of the past.

Eventually, but not right now. I've been holding off buying a new receiver with HDMI until ones that decoded DTS-MA and TrueHD came out. If it wasn't for players with analog outs, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy lossless audio this past year. Also, there seems to be some debate as to if the PS3 will be able to output a raw DTS-MA stream to be decoded externally, and it doesn't decode it internally.

Sorry, but I'll always go for the set-top player. The next generation ones will no doubt be as good as the PS3, if not better. Plus, I don't want to be seen going into a store buying a video game machine. I don't want people thinking I'm a loser who's never touched a woman.

Ouch! So what does it mean if you have an XBOX 360 and nearly 20k in gamerscore?

No one asked how long it took to power on, they asked how long it takes to load a disc - and my answers were accurate. I'd much rather have a longer power on sequence than a long-ass disc load sequence. Because you only have to power on the device once for any viewing period, if you want to check out some stuff on 3 or 4 discs you will be sitting there forever if your player takes 60 seconds just to start playing a disc!

Just for shits & giggles I tried out the Pirate game. Disc loaded up in 5-10 seconds before getting an image. Went to the main menu (5 seconds) Went to the Liar's Dice, hit enter, 2 seconds later a video montage came up & I had to wait 10 seconds before I could actually place a bet in the game. From there on, everything in the game was seamless. No loading. So add it all up,

10+5+2+10 seconds from disc load to actually playing the game. You do the math.
