Did you Care about the A/V Quality of DVD's before High-Def?
Not sure where to post this...
Did you care about the Quality of DVD's before High-Def? Where you this critical about it? My boy brought this comment up because lately I've been discussing the Quality of recent Catalog/New Releases like the recent ign's review of "300." Before High-Def, I just used to pick up the DVD and sit down and enjoy the Film! Now I'm rating HD DVD's VC-1/DOLBY TrueHD or commenting how the it's Too Soft...

Of hell yeah, I even so far as to import a bunch just to obtain either better A/V quality and/or supplements. I even spent $70 on the Japanese Superbit of Last Action Hero just to obtain the DTS 5.1 soundtrack and a better transfer.
BTW, Sony needs to bring it to Blu-ray ASAP!!! ![]() |

I cared, but wasn't as critical about it as I am now with HD.
The fact they were almost double the rez of VHS & you didn't need an eye appointment first to see the difference really kept me from having doubts or worries of the transfer. If the film was old & it was a low budget, not popular film, my expectations were not very high so I wasn't disappointed with a bad transfer. Nor did I care to have a widescreen tv or surround sound. I viewed most with stereo sound on a 4:3 36" tube. |

Us filer's like to stay on the bleeding edge, I remember buying crap like The Haunting DTS just for the audio track. EDKO version's of Hero and House of Flying Daggers just for the 1.5mbit DTS-ES, even though, they aren't my types of films. Just to showcase the audio when visitors were over.
For video, some of my fav movies already had awesome transfers, like LOTR EEs, I was the one who skipped the theatricals b/c I knew the EEs were coming (thanks PJ!), and not such great flicks but still must owns because of their technical merits, such as the SW Prequels .I still plan to do the same with optical HD, Crank isn't the best flick of all time but I've still not found a BR or HD-DVD to match its amazingly clear video (yes not even dead man's chest). I'm stuck on audio at the moment waiting for a good affordable HDMI 1.3 receiver. |

I can remember caring about quality when it came to dubbing the Crow to VHS(all my VHS movies were dubbed). I did it several times until it looked as good as the original, I always cared about DVD quality.

With DVDs I cared more for video quality than audio quality. Now, with HD, I care more for audio (won't buy any film without a lossless format: True HD, DTS HD-MA or PCM). I still care about video, but it doesn't HAVE to be a perfect picture, like Memento. But I want my audio! Stupid Warner and Paramount are screwing things up!!!

Yeah, I did. I know that many did, thus the success of the double dip, as people would buy the same movie just to get the DTS version. In 2000, I spent quite a bit of money to upgrade my HT to have a Sony Wega TV, and Sony 5.1 receiver that could handle DTS. Now in 2007, I've done it again (well, I bought my TV in 2005, because I wasn't about to lug that 2-ton Wega all the way to DC), and so I could say that I've always scrutinized the a/v of movies...well except for VHS.
