Bram Stoker's Dracula: Blu-ray

Quote:
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced they will bring Francis Ford Coppola's big-budget update of 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' to Blu-ray in time for Halloween.

Due in stores October 2, Sony will give everyone's favorite bloodsucker the full 1080p treatment, with the studio's usual uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround audio.

Supplemental details have not yet been revealed, but we'll keep you posted.

Retail price will list for a suggested $28.95.

Watch for full specs in the days ahead, and in the meantime we've added a listing for 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule, under October 2.

If I ever get a BD player...

Hmmmm, I'm gonna guess....NOTHING! Boo!
Even so, it'll be nice to have this in HD, I've been holding off on replacing my lost copy for a while so this works out well.

I rather have the 1979 version with Frank Langella.

Um, I might clarify that this is for the Special Edition DVD. The blu-ray edition may not have that cover.

New details say that Coppola himself has done a commentary for the bd release of Dracula.

If they use the same cover as the new DVD, I'll use this as custom art instead

Really? Everything on that cover except for Gary Oldman looks like it was made out of Play-Doh. And what is Dracula doing? Vogueing? Showing his spirit fingers?

He’s hiding from the light. And the font is the same as the film’s… just yellow.

Nothing better than the dubbed editions cover art.

Ouch.

Presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, simply put this transfer looks dated. The source is in OK shape, but is far from spectacular. Blacks are consistent, and contrast is perfectly fine (to the team at Zoetrope's credit, they haven't jacked this one up in an effort to make it look white hot), but the print is quite grainy and flat, with enough speckles of dirt and other blemishes that frankly I'm surprised it passed muster at Sony. Shadow delineation is also weak -- darker scenes are quite two-dimensional, and don't look much improved over the Superbit standard-def DVD version of the film. Softness is also rampant, and 'Dracula' never looks particularly sharp.

This aired on HBO-HD months back and I didn't think it looked that bad, of course I sleepily watched it on a Saturday night at like 3 a.m. after a few beers, so...

Never a real fan of the film, I'd rather have Mary Shelly's Frankenstein on BD, but both films seem overly self-important and contrived to me.

Could you clarify how Dracula is self-important? Perhaps it’s been too long since I saw it, but that was not that vibe I got.

From AVS they mention because of the way the movie was edited, the specs and print defects here and there can never be removed without a major Lucasian overhaul. Also I do remember seeing this theatrically, it never had a sharp look to it. Plus Bracks reviews are sometimes too harsh, I'm gonna go ahead and get this, any improvement over the DVD is welcome.
