Close Encounters of the Third Kind Nov 13th Blu-ray

Hmm maybe them rumors for Universal could be true with this Spielberg getting a Blu-ray release.

From USA Today.com

Quote:
Details: Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (DVD, $40; Blu-ray Disc, $50). Includes three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition, and Steven Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998.

Why it's important: It's the first time a Spielberg movie has been issued on high-definition disc, and it's the first home video release of all three versions

What's new: An interview with Spielberg created especially for this release and a retrospective documentary.

Plus: Only on the 50 GB Blu-ray edition are new "storyboard-to-scene" comparisons and the original 1977 "Watch the Skies" featurette. Blu-ray, says David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, "will add yet another new and thrilling dimension to this timeless film."

Yeah, CE3K is the one oddball Spielberg release that's not put out by Universal or Dreamworks, nor does he own the rights to it like he does his other films (minus Jaws). Sony knows he won't be working with them and thus doesn't really care about upsetting him or not, he has no say. Spielberg still has major ties to Universal even after the Dreamworks sale to Paramount, so they abide by his wishes.

We have not heard what Universal has planned for the Holiday Season. It is E.T.'s 25th Aniv this year. I doubt they would let this milestone pass without doing something special. How about a counter-attack of releasing E.T. on HD DVD same day Sony releases Close Encounters on Blu Ray?

That would work for me. Though I rarely watch my E.T. DVD release.

This likely means we will have some "surprise" HD DVD announcements of Spielberg titles for Q4! Bring on Jaws and JP!

He's obviously not upset if he is doing a commentary for the movie. Whether this means he will be open for hd-dvd movies in the future is another matter, but we know he has given his endorsement for the bd release.

That artwork is beautiful!!
