Spider-Man Trilogy: Blu-ray

Quote:
Ending months of anticipation, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced it will bring the complete 'Spider-Man' trilogy to Blu-ray this October.

Considered one of the "holy grails" of Blu-ray ever since the format launched last year, a next-gen release of the 'Spider-Man' films has been the subject of endless speculation for months.

Now, timed to coincide with the home video of 'Spider-Man 3,' Sony has at last confirmed it will bring the blockbuster comic book trilogy to Blu-ray on October 30 in what is sure to be one of the format's biggest sellers.

Arriving day-and-date with the standard-def DVD version, Sony will load the Blu-ray edition of 'Spider-Man 3' with a wealth of extras, including two audio commentaries (the first with director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, and other with the producers, editor and special-effects supervisor), eleven making-of featurettes, still galleries, bloopers, a Snow Patrol music video and a bevy of theatrical trailers and TV spots.

In addition, on October 30 Sony will also debut the 'Spider-Man High-Definition Trilogy,' a box set containing all three films in the franchise.

Even if this WAS on HD-DVD I would not spend my money on this shit. The Spider-Man trilogy is Sony boardroom manufacturing at it's worst. Three horrible cheeseburger films with rotten effects and the same plot recycled over and over.

Sure, the Spiderman films aren't the 4 and a half star-deserving, heartfelt, little indies like, say, Transformers but I did like the first two films quite a bit.

The third film was horrible though.

That being said, I'll still pick this up.

Spiderman 3 BD is reportedly going to cost $49.99 by itself. That is rape IMO.

It'll be $25-$30 by the time it hits. I'd bet the boxset will come in at around $75.

Why do they always choose the ugliest one-sheet?

Take your pick.

Yeah, and every DVD costs $34.99.

Anyway, I'm jazzed... The first and second movies were awesome and the third was worth owning for completeness' sake, I suppose.

Count me in.

If you wanna see some rape, check out the price of HD DVD combo discs in Canada sometime. Hot Fuzz has a list price of $54.95, as do many others!

Let me guess HMV! I honestly don't know why people shop there. They aren't helping High-Def.

It's rare to see HD DVD Combo's sell over $39.99 CAN.

I noticed that but at the cashier it changes to $39.99 (Error, they have too many.)

Best Buy (owns Future Shop) sells it for that price.

The most I've paid for a combo HD DVD is $39.99 CDN. (Hot Fuzz) Most discs go for between $20 and $30 here, (usually about $25 give or take a few). I won't argue blu-ray discs go for a few dollars less (like $1 or $2) but hey, HD DVD players are cheaper and I'll never support the pure evil that is sony, or their relatively douchey fan base. And before anyone says it, this will not end the format war, just as the Matrix trilogy didn't/wont. The Spider-Man flicks are fun (minus the unholy shit that was the 3rd) but I dont think ANY title will make the average Joe say, "Holy Shit! I NEED to spend $500+ to upgrade my home theatre to see this movie in..HIGH DEF." The way I see it, in the end both formats will either co-exist for years and years to come, and tailor to the home theatre junkies like us, especially with the advent of those players that play both formats.

Because hd-dvd/MS fanboys are so fantastic.

I will pick up the box set. Might as well get all three movies at once. The third movie was disappointing, but I'll still go with the box set. Same as with Harry Potter when it comes out.

I've never paid more than $39.99 either, I was just saying that the list price was that high, much like the Spiderman 3 disc Ruined was talking about.
Anyway, if I'm buying a Combo disc I almost always order from the US, saves me a bit of cash.

Digital Bits is reporting $50 for Spiderman 3 alone, $100 for the trilogy box... the standard DVD SE is $36.

So, I assume the set will be marked down to $60-something? I can live with that, surely.

Also, it includes both versions of Spiderman 2!

I've stayed out of hi-def altogether as yet, but since this seems to be where everybody's talking about Spider-Man, I'll post here.

Spider-Man 2 is one of my favorite films ever, but this is easily the most disappointing film I've seen this year. It had so much potential that got squandered simply because they overloaded it with too many villians, subplots and cheesy moments for it to breathe. Casting Sandman as Ben's real killer was an unnessecary misstep which diluted the emotion of the original film's sequences which it modified, and Raimi clearly did not understand the fan appeal of Venom and didn't know how to treat that character. (After the original film opened and introduced me to Spider-Man, I watched reruns of the '90s animated series on ABC Family and was particularly impressed with their Venom episodes.) Gwenn Stacy was just not interesting, and the Peter/MJ story would have been just as compelling without hee. The strongest portions of the film are those which involve Harry, and I hope that if a fourth film is made they take a lesson from the first two and focus on one villian without so many tangents. Because there is a really good movie buried in here amongst all the crap, trying to get out, and that's what makes the film not a complete failure. A fourth one, if good, will be able to redeem the franchise.

But all that said, of course I'm going to get the DVD anyway to complete the set and -- if only because the others are also two-disc sets -- I feel like I have to get the double-disc. This in particular is where I resent the new trend of single-and-double releases; when the other films have had exellent two-disc releases as standard, you'd think that they would finish the set the same way. But no! And it doesn't matter that they had exellent posters for this film; the cover concept is good, but they had to go use a very cartoony-lookng look which totally clashes with the photorealistic look of the other covers in this series. Not to mention the border on the two-disc, as well. (Nice artwork for the Blu-ray boxed set, though! And you've gotta notice their sneakyness in not making the two prior films available on Blu outside of the box, which effectively forces people to buy the much lousier third installment. I expect that was deliberate given the less-than-phenominal reception of the third movie.)

So, sigh -- yeah, I'll pick it up, but I'm not happy about the way it's being released.

I must be in the minority, i thought spiderman 3 wasnt half bad. Not as good as 2, but still fun and in keeping with the raimi vibe of one and two.

I suspect when the next film comes out in theaters or on dvd/hd will be when they decide to release the anthology films. Personally I'm only interested in the Burton ones.

Same here, no real interest.

Though I love having Army of Darkness and Darkman on HD DVD and the prospects of Evil Dead 2 coming to BD...

Kinda the same deal with Peter Jackson, love having The Frighteners on HD DVD, want Braindead, Bad Taste, and Meet the Feebles in HD badly, don't care for the LotR trilogy or King Kong.

Preorders are now being taken on amazon.com. I've placed mine. $69.25 for three Spiderman movies that will have great a/v is a deal, imo.

It's too bad Spider-Man 3 wasn't what it could have been. It would have made a fun Halloween film with the OCT 30th release date.

If Raimi had utilized his horror roots with Venom, we could have had the creepiest superhero film ever.
