Face/Off

Spot the difference...

Seems a little odd... the bonus features are all in HD & the HD-DVD version is missing most of them, surely disc space can't be an issue?

Since the documentaries are in HD I am betting space is exactly the issue.

This was originally announced as a two disc set for both formats. Paramount must have decided to cut it to one disc and lose the extras for the HD-DVD folks I guess. I'll bet if they used VC1 instead of AVC they could fit it all on. And I suspect the HD bonus features are all compressed MPEG2 on both discs.

That's not very fair. I thought this was a 2-disc set. I am officially pissed about this!

The two-disc set special edition double dip comes out in xmas 2009

Stupid decision to include both DD+ lossy and DTS-HD lossy on both releases. Could have used the space + bandwidth for a TrueHD track instead.

Face/Off on HD DVD is 30GB & BD 50GB

Here's the finalized artwork;

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=64762

There is 6.1 dts at 1.5 though & the dolby track for the HD DVD is 1.5 while the dolby on the BD is 640.

As dugpa pointed out, both HD features are encoded MPEG-2 with the main feature for both formats being AVC.

I also should point, I don't give a sh!t.

I can't see a rerelease in two years simply to port over features already on DVD and BD...

Besides, HD DVD won't be around in 2009.

BURN!

I'm sure I saw the HD DVD version advertised recently as being a two-disc set like MI:III.

It was originally announced as a two disc set for both formats. But it seems somewhere along the way that changed and it's one disc now. Some retailers may not have gotten the newst info (or bothered to change it).

I'm just happy to see that there are equal DTS tracks on both formats. I might get this one, though I have never been a big fan of the movie.

"Blu Ray suck!!!"

Can't we all just agree that neither format sucks? I mean really, it's more or less the same thing. Damn, the more I think about all the arguments between the two I can't help but think of how silly this all is. I mean, they use the same bloody codecs! Sure we can prefer a format or whatever, but Blu Ray doesn't suck. HD DVD doesn't suck. PS3 doesn't suck. Xbox 360 doesn't suck.
Atari Jaguar games sucked. DIVX pay per play discs sucked. Hitler sucked. I suck at baseball. These are things that we should all be able to agree about.

The hd dvd version having less features is actually a good thing. It means the hd dvd viewers will be done watching the disc faster and ready to go buy another hd dvd disc to watch which equals more sales for hd!

That would explain BD's 2:1 sales lead. People who are true A/V enthusiasts don't care about extra content.

That last screenshot hurts. It looks like the BD's brightness was boosted as well.

BD version also looks washed out in comparison. In motion I'd imagine the BD version looks very "busy."

Though HD DVD looks a little too smooth, noise reduction?

Yeah, but the HD-DVD images look darker and a little blurry. I think the skintone looks a bit more accurate on the BD. But that's just what my eyes are seeing.

I don't know about that, there may be some DNR but looking at the pixel structure of the noise in the BD version it does not look like natural grain either. Look at Travolta's ear in the first screenshot, there looks to be some sort of digital dithering pattern on it on the BD version. Its possible that the BD version had an overzealous sharpness filter applied to get that look.

When not zoomed at 200%, the HD DVD version looks more natural IMO, while the BD version looks to have some veil of digital noise.
