Top Gun Japanese HD DVD will have TrueHD 6.1

Via HD DVD Format Blog:

Quote:
'Top Gun' Japanese HD DVD Features Discrete 6.1 Lossless Audio

Paramount Pictures (Japan) will be releasing Top Gun on HD DVD, this October 26. Fans of Top Gun will be glad to know that the Japanese HD DVD release contains the Dolby TrueHD 6.1 (English) lossless and Dolby Digital-Plus 6.1 (English & Japanese) audio tracks. DTS-ES 6.1 (English) audio option is also provided. The disc contains English & Japanese subtitle options. It is expected to be priced at 4,935 Yen (inclusive of relevant taxes).

An audio commentary (which I suspect is the one ported over from the Special Collector's Edition DVD) could also be expected on this release, pending further confirmation.

Based on the current information that I have, it seems that the North American HD DVD/BD release of Top Gun is missing out on these features. The North American HD DVD/BD release contains 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus - and does not have any of the DVD special features ported over.
Also the Japanese Blu-ray will have PCM, but at 5.1.

I'll wait for the 11.1 version from Vietnam.

The US versions may change based on the new Paramount move towards lossless in the US. At least I can hope so. I was just beginning to warm to Paramount, but if they are going to revert back to crappy DD+ transfers again, well, I'll sit out on purchasing their movies, once again.

I'd like each wall & ceiling in my HT to be speakers.

The U.S. HD DVD will have TrueHD and the BD will have PCM as well. Though I'm unsure they'll be 6.1.

Here's the Japanese Audio Specs:

BD:
- PCM 5.1
- DTS-ES Matrix 6.1
- Dolby EX

HD DVD:
- Dolby TrueHD 6.1
- DTS-ES Matrix 6.1
- Dolby Plus 6.1

They may have done this transfer a while ago. And, a 1.5mbps DD+ track is far from "crappy" - in fact its probably not any audibly different than TrueHD. If this does turn out to be a DD+/DD Paramount release, since you are dual format you could always get the HD DVD with the 1.5mbps soundtrack instead of the 640kbps BD version.

You forget that Paramount doesn't do 1.5 mbps DD+ on blu-ray, they do the inferior 640kbps ones. So yes, having 5.1 PCM on it will be MUCH better. This will be a must-buy as well. I am so happy that Paramount is going to highdef audio formats...or at least making them balanced.

Yeah, but since you are dual format, you can choose the 1.5mbps HD DVD version. I doubt they will differ in any other way (like most Paramount releases). That is one of the nice things about being dual format...

I went dual format to get Universal and Weinstein movies, and various Warner titles. I was avoiding Paramount because of their inequities. But you know my preference for lossless, Ruined.

Sure, but you're not going to buy Top Gun if neither format has lossless, even if the HD DVD version's 1.5mbps lossy sounds just as good? Its one of the best demo movies there is!

No, I would likely get the hd-dvd version for Top Gun. Though with MI:3, I got blu-ray, but that was because I got the $10 off coupon from Sony for getting a ps3.

But I'm happy it's lossless...

When I was dual-format I bought BD whenever possible because it seemed to me, even then, BD was the clear favorite to win and thus the software had a higher value for me.

I bet deep down that's a factor for Ganth as well.

Holy crap, I agree with this!

1.5 or 13.8 or 485.2515494, it won't matter if Top Gun is Lossless or not.

I saw this in 1080i, it isn't that great.

That said, I'd still get the BD version.
