Battlestar Galactica Season 1 on HD-DVD

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/..._on_HD_DVD/859

One of the main reasons I bought into the format was to enjoy this series. I will be buying it when it becomes available for pre-order.

Oh joy, I can't wait for the tons of people who buy this and then complain that it's grainy and doesn't "pop" like they expected.

After seeing the show on Universal HD, I know for a fact that it looks spectacular.

Plus it has a TrueHD audio track. I have seen it on UniversalHD as well, and it does look good.

I didn't say it didn't look good, I've seen it on UniversalHD as well. But it is a show that's shot grainy and doesn't have that football game "pop" to it. So people will be complaining, mark my words.

I've never had the privilege to see this show cause I havn't had cable/satt in over 2 years. Maybe a blind buy depending on price.

Have you changed your mind about buying HD?

Yeah, the next morning (After Paramount fiasco) I realized I can't go back to the SD crap. I've seen wayyy to many HD titles. + as luck would have it, Paramount doesn't release near the amount of titles Sony, Warner, & Universal shell out. Meaning I wouldn't get burned as bad if they decided to support both again.

I've never seen this show either but the hype makes this a probable blind purchase...

I lost interest halfway through season 2. It's a good show, it just didn’t grab me.

Well, this series didn't get a good rating from hddigest, but I'll hold off judgment till I actually see it. I did buy the series, and he is correct about the flimsy packaging. I am glad that I read about how to take the discs out, because I would have probably yanked the discs as well.

Sure enough, when I inspected each disc, 4 out of 6 had scratches. None were that deep and I doubt they will hurt playback, but it is unfortunate considering how good this series is.

uhm, I am disappointed as its grainy and the video doesn't pop.

Season 1 especially is highly recommended as a blind buy. It is one of the best things to be on TV in the last 10 years, but I've seen this on Aussie HDTV and it looked much better ... what the heck happened? It still looks great, much better than its SD counterpart, but I mean, what the heck?

I wonder if there will be some new packaging released so that it matches with all the other HD/Blu cases, like was done for The Simpsons?

Thanks for the warning. Sounds like a BD disc would never survive in this packaging. The Sopranos (HBO) sets are almost BD disc killers. This is one advantage I'd chalk up to HD DVD sinse their discs are actually 2 halves.

Really? I have yet to get a scratched BD disc, even with the terrible shipping job with Planet Earth, where half the discs were loose and jiggling around in the case. However, I have had scratched hd-dvds that haven't played that I've rented from Netflix. I still don't know how "You, Me, and Dupree" ended.

Yeah but does your PE discs stay in the hub without becoming loose? The ultra thick coating on the BD discs prevents them from staying put in 2/4 hubs on my set. The complete Die-hard collection is similar but at least each hub holds all 4 discs firmly. Havn't received BG season 1 yet so can't comment yet as to how messed up it is but so far Planet Earth is the worse packaging I currently have. Creative packaging is a pet peeve of mine. Example, C.S.I. on dvd has had 7 different styles of packaging for all 7 seasons released. Another tv show I am not fond of the packaging is the Star Trek season 1 HD DVD. 10 combo discs in a flimsy plastic shell. The best packaging for 4 discs in 1 case imo so far is Rescue Me for Blu-Ray.

I inspect my discs when I get them if they are in a set. My Prison Break, Die Hard, and Smallville discs stayed put. It's only been PE that had problems, and those discs remained unscratched.

This BSG set is a pretty flimsy cardboard folded case, and in the middle of the cardboard panel is this rubber stump that the disc is wedged on. It's really cheap and ridiculous considering the effort put into other sets like Heroes and the price of the set. I am withholding judgment on the A/V quality until I see it for myself.
