Hulk (2003) HD DVD
What's the title/menu screen like on the US HD DVD?
On the UK one you have the usual Universal menu on the left with the Hulk logo in the bottom right-hand corner and three animated Universal logos across the middle of the screen. It looks a bit cheap. It arrived today and I was expecting it to be a US version but it was a UK one. I believe they're the same apart from the ugly UK age certificates on the front, back and spine and the chubby case. I prefer the slimmer US cases and their lack of age certificates on the front and spine. Great picture quality but I haven't been able to fire up the amp to see what the DD+ audio is like. |

I might eventually get Hulk for my collection, but I just can't get over how the movie is long and plodding. But for demo purposes, I know it would be a great one to have in my collection. It's not a combo disc, so it's eligible.

Hulk is, IMHO (well, maybe not so humble really), the best looking HD-DVD period. I'm also probably the only person on the face of the Earth who likes this film. The slowness is just fine, I don't need megacarchase MTV editing in my cinema thank you.

What about the title/menu screen on the US HD DVD? What does it look like?
One thing I noticed with the audio in stereo is that you have to turn it up to hear normal dialogue and then down when Hulk's on screen. I've never come across a disc with such varying volumes of audio. |

I may just add Hulk to my hd-dvd collection, since it has the dugpa seal of approval on quality.

Across the middle of the UK title screen it has three small animated Universal logos in a row, the same as the screensaver one, with a small Hulk logo in the bottom right-hand corner. It just looks a bit naff and a Hulk themed title screen would have been much better. |

I gotta say that I prefer the "initial" Universal HD DVD menu style, the one seen on titles like Serenity and The Bourne Supremacy. The second "Universal logo" menu (like on Unleashed) and the now standard "sliding picture reel" both suck in comparison. It's simply more exciting to see full width clips with film music overlay IMO.
Also I think Uni's newest menu system is what fucks up 720p resolution mode. Setting my A1 to 720p with new Universal titles results in jagged lines all over the menu and transfer. This doesn't happen with Uni's older titles or any other studio's HD DVDs. I think it's the way the image shrinks while selecting a chapter "in-movie" that screws it up, like the entire menu system is encoded in 1080i/p and only functions correctly in 1080i/p. |
