Would The Dark Crystal ever make it to HD-DVD?

The film was produced by Universal and released by Columbia, so I'm unsure of this. Still, it would look and sound wonderful in hi-def. Not so fussed over Crappyrinth.

Sony owns the right to this (in Europe and the US). Considering it was just remastered (the SD-DVD was re-released this week), I would expect a Blu-Ray shortly. Don't hold your breath for a HD-DVD release.

The film was never produced by Universal, they just distributed it at the time of it's theatrical release. It was produced by Henson Productions. Right now Sony has had the distribution rights for ages. Once they expire, they'll either be renewed by Sony or go to Disney. So don't look for an HD-DVD release in this country or Europe. Not sure who has the rights in Japan though. But I suspect Sony has it world wide. So don't expect an hd-dvd release.

Weird how the Universal logo still appears at the beginning of the Superbit DVD then.

Not weird at all. The original distribuitor's logo often stays at the start of the film after they no longer have the rights. For instance, Paramount's logo still appears at the start of Psycho even though they only distribuited the original theatrical release in 1960 and Universal has done every re-release since then.

I'd definitely love to own Dark Crystal on bd. It would be an automatic buy.

Not anytime soon in the US as its owned by Sony and they founded the competing format. However, an HD DVD import from another country is a very real possibility since HD DVD is region-free. I'll see what I can dig up.
