The one thing that puts me off Tremors is the fact that the main female character is so dumpy and unattractive.

I would buy it if Universal released an HD of the under-rater Tremors 2: Aftershocks.

It has a lot of EE.

Apparently the same master being shown on Universal HD. A lot cleaner than the standard DVD with no compression artifacts, but be prepared for EE - probably an older master, as this film bombed and hence has a limited audience. Probably wasnt worth the cost of remastering/restoring (at least this stage in the game) with HD's limited audience.

This was a huge film on video, which was why they produced 3 DTV sequels and a TV show.

There are quite a few films that had not-so-good theatrical runs which found a cult following on video. But those type of films generally don't get the attention of films that were big hits in the theater. This is probably the best we will see Tremors until HDM goes mass market if that actually happens.

For a dude that generally likes movies of this nature, I'll pass. I liked that other stuff he did...the kung fu logging landslide movie.

This is one of the best studio B movies of the 90's, you'd be missing out.

Of all the people to come to "Tremors" defense, the last person I would have thought that would be is David St. Dubly.

Nevermind, I would probably say Dugpa.

Any B movie made without a hint of cynicism and a load of enthusiasm gets bonus points from me.

So who's gonna buy it even though it has some significant EE? I read its still a massive step up from the DVD and otherwise a good transfer, but the EE might really distract based on the comments I've read. Any takers? If so let's hear your opinions on it.

can you tell me what EE is? Since i'm only scratching the surface on my HD-DVD knowledge it'd help.

I never bought this on dvd but might pick this up as this will probalby be the only purchase of this film I will ever make. Yeah its campy and the lead female isn't all that much too look at but Michael Gross as Burt is a classic role and I can't resist

Unfortunately whoever was doing Universal's film transfers from the mid 90s to early 00s went to town with EE. Now we will have to likely suffer with those transfers for years to come on movies that weren't big theatrical hits. Oh well, I can live with it, would be nice to see it fixed at some point though.

Here's a good shot to see what it looks like & the EE in it:

More here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1042

There is most definitely heavy EE. However for a movie from 1989 its not horrible - I imagine without the EE we would be complaining it looks as soft as a standard DVD

Iggy, if you blow them up, you can see the halos more clearly. Still, I don't think it is as bad as a soft picture. It would have just been nice to have the best of both worlds.

I'm still not sure if I am going to get this one or not.

A lot of DNR in those shots too, not just EE.

Finn Carter? Dumpy? Unattractive? Or do you think Reba McIntyre was the female lead?

Sehnzeleid gave it a poor ass rating cause of massive EE. I've seen some titles with poor EE (Don't have the disc yet) but that isn't enough of a factor to trash the entire presentation imo. If I see some HD-ness, I'm gonna call it.

Yes, it is IMHO.

"A little better than DVD" when it can look much, much better or "It's definitely HD, but with massive problems" simply isn't going to cut it with me.

I'm going to call a spade a spade. I bought into the formats for "close to the source as possible" quality. I personally find many people are far too forgiving or believe admitting a title's A/V quality sucks is an offense to whichever format it's on. That's complete and utter bullshit that I'm sick and tired of. What's even more ridiculous is many times these problems are obvious on my now nearly 5 years old 50" 720p display. I find it very hard to believe people with much newer and higher rezzed displays don't see it or these displays magically correct man-made problems like EE and DNR. I would love to spend thousands on top of the line displays and either not care or be oblivious to crappy presentations at inflated prices. I've had enough of people saying "it's not apparent on 720p displays" to prove their 1080p dick is bigger or swearing you need an enormous PJ to accurately judge PQ.

Though with Tremors, it not only has thick edge enhancement but heavy noise reduction as well. The thing that really pisses me off about this release is that it's not a big film and it should live and die on the the HD DVD's quality if Universal is going to ask $29.98 MSRP. For that price it should be reference (or damn near it) quality within the film's limits. I feel like I would have been better off buying the Tremors 1-4 Attack Pack for $10 at frickin' Wal Mart.
