Still buying SD-DVDs?

Just curious. The only ones I've bought are TV season sets that will likely never make HD. I've bought Dexter, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and seasons of The Shield... Oh and Joe Satriani: Live from Sanfrancisco.

Same here. I only buy TV season sets. I know sooner or later the HD will show, but how long do i have to wait? I have patience because i have a backlog of movies to watch.

I wish Dexter was released on HD... Weeds was, dammit.

Anyway I buy season sets, yes. Probably a couple movies... *thinks*... actually I can't think of any new releases or catolgue titles I've bought since Casino Royale that weren't SD, and I eventually rebought Casino Royale, so...

Yeah.

I guess my answer is no.

Mostly tv shows on DVD only. I bought Smallville Seasons 1-4 on SD cause I think Warner has plans to release them in HD & I don't wan't to end up broke.

My last new release SD purchase was Number 23 a week or so ago. Before that, my last SD movie purchase was April 2006. Have yet to watch it but I want to see it sooner rather than wait for New Line to go HD.

Only recently released to dvd cult movies from the 80's or low budget documentaries, stuff that won't be on hd for years and years.

Or Universal movies.

Pretty much anything that Disney, Fox, or Sony/MGM. And I usually buy them from Hollywood Video, used 3 or 4 for $20

Oh yeah. I even bought Letters from Iwo Jima on SD DVD even though I have an HD player. Why? It was really cheap (eight bucks).

There are a few others. Jbat31 is one example. But most posting have bought into one or both formats.

Okay, I don't feel so bad. I figured people would only post if they actually had adopted HD/BD, but this thread made me want to answer, since I'm still buying nothing but SD. As much as I'm all about movies, I just don't have the budget (college student) to be an early adopter, and "the next technology" honestly doesn't appeal to me until we know exactly what the next technology is.

I still buy Criterion discs and discs that I know won't hit HD for a while. I also get TV sets that are not on HD. Actually, TV sets are becoming a pain. For example, I have 5 seasons of Smallville in SD and I’m not sure if I should just continue to get SD or start buying the HD sets. There’s something aggravating about having show spread across various formats.

If it's available in HD and you want it, I would go with HD. Watching SD for a tv show really shows the flaws in dvd, even with the upconverting. I haven't watched my hd versions of Smallville (season 5 in hd-dvd, or season 6 (bd) which I will get next week), but I am betting they are worlds better. I know that Weeds didn't look as good in sd as it did in hd. The only issue is it being more expensive, but I still think it's not too bad. For example, Heroes was a good deal, and I wouldn't want that in sd.

Smallville does look better in HD, but it's no slouch in SD. Perhaps it's just my OCD, but having Seasons 1-4 in SD, Season 5 in HD and Season 6 n BD, would drive me nuts.

I still am, but as has been stated, it is mainly TV shows. Just recently picked up Robot Chicken Season 2. I pay much closer attention to whether something is coming out on HD-DVD or Blu Ray for that matter. If it is, even if its Blu Ray and I wont be buying it for another 6 months, I have been waiting and not picking up the SD (mainly applies to new releases).

I've got the HDTV, but don't have an interest in jumping into the format wars just yet. I'm not seeing many titles I'd want to own in HD that I would watch more than once. Still have a backlog of at least 50 SD DVDs to watch, so even if I did buy a player and bought HD discs immediately, it would go into the backlog of stuff to watch. Now that football season started and the new TV season is coming up, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray would take a backseat for me, at least until the football season is over.

That's a good decision then. While I like my HD player, and it can be mighty impressive, regular DVD still looks pretty damned good, especially with the upconversion.

Unlike some, I would not categorize the difference between SD DVD and HD DVD as being comparable to the difference between VHS and SD DVD. I mean, I remember trying to watch VHS after watching stuff on DVD and found it to be practically unwatchable. I hardly feel that way about my DVDs.

Shoot, Apocolypto looked brilliant with the upconversion.

As far as new releases go I usually stick with only buying SD of TV shows that most likely won't ever be remastered in hd anytime soon. Though I do pick up a lot of SD dvds in the $3.99-$6.99 sales at BB and CC each week. Lots of films that I kind of like, but not enough to pay $20+ for.

We're in a very similar boat, except I don't have HDTV yet either.

Ditto. Yes, I see the great improvement from SD to HD, but it's not the leap into the digital age that was VHS to DVD. While I saw those as two completely different media altogether, HD is just an improvement to DVD, albeit a considerable one. I haven't decided if I prefer HD or BD, but if it were just one or the other out there, I'd probably jump on board. However, I'm not that interested in making my DVD library obsolete just yet in favor of something that may or may not win the war...mainly because I just can't afford it. But I am watching with interest to see what will eventually be the next step.

HD and BD only for me now.

Exceptions - any TV series I am still collecting (but if it hits HD or BD I'll upgrade).

Sporting events also on DVD as they'll never see the light on HD or BD. Cos back titles never were re-released from VHS to DVD.

I'm about through w/ SD DVDs except for box sets that I fear may be never get an HD version. Case in point, the upcoming Three Stooges box sets.

By the way...

I've been away from this forum for a long time. Hope its ok that I say this. But I came back now that I'm into HD media.

But sadly, and w/out naming names, it seems there are a few members that keep posting the same rants and signatures over and over and over either supporting or dismissing one HD disc format over the other.

You can actually enjoy both. Sheesh. I'd like to get some info w/ out every other post being a propaganda piece.

its true that I am focusing much more on HD release dates now than SD, and several titles on SD have slipped under my radar until I have found them on store shelves weeks after their release, but I am still buying many SD titles. The bargain bin holds a treasure trove of discs that are priced just right at $3 - $5 each. The picture quality on many discs, even older ones, is just fine and titles like Hannibal Rising will be purchased on SD simply because I have the rest of the series on SD and the picture quality on many recent discs has been stellar.

I just watched The 6th Day the other night and it looked great for an SD disc that cost me $5.
