3:10 to Yuma announced for Blu

Details at HDD

Quote:
Lionsgate has sent an early alert to retailers that '3:10 to Yuma' will be saddling up for a day-and-date release on both Blu-ray and standard DVD this January.

A remake of the classic 1957 western, '3:10 to Yuma' hit theaters in early September, and has earned nearly $50 million at the domestic box office so far, largely on the backs of stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

Lionsgate will give the James Mangold-directed actioner a fairly speedy trip to video, with a retail street date of January 8, 2008 for the Blu-ray and DVD versions.

Given the early announcement to retail, there are no tech specs or supplemental details available as of yet. A full press release is expected shortly, so we'll keep you posted.

Retail for the Blu-ray will be $39.98.
I'll be picking this up as I missed it in theaters.

This wasn't bad, though a somewhat pointless remake as it didn't really add anything over the original. Not sure if I'll pick it up or not. Depends on my mood the day it comes out I guess.

I really liked this movie so I'll be picking it up...I'll probably pick up the original at some point as well...

I might get this based on reviews. It will be a blind buy though.

Nice cover art. Very reminiscent of the Leone and Eastwood westerns, both the ones done together and separately too.

It's amazing that the release time to DVD is getting so short. Well not so amazing as understandable. The biggest losers as HD gets more popular are probably movie theaters. Home theaters are great for being with just the friends you want to be with and no others.

Can't wait to see the big blockbuster that will go straight to high def with no theater release.

Several studio heads have been quoted as saying that theatrical releases have become "trailers for the DVD."

Studios usually make at least twice the theatrial take if not more on dvd. That's where the money is right now, and if they release it quickly they can capitalize on the marketing already out there and not have to spend as much in addition.

Right, that started happening with tape sales each year taking a bit more of the total from the theatrical release. DVD sales expanded it greatly, then HD big screen sets expanded that exponentially.

Yet I take aome issue with what the studio heads say, especially considering their penchant for simplistic phraseology and hyperbole. The trailers for the people who will not go to the theater and just wait for the DVD are still what's being shown as TV commercials. Theater releases are good for word-of-mouth recommendations and reviewers comments, which certainly help a lot, yet I still think the commercials for theatrical release, then again later for DVD release create more awareness.

However, I think it's very possible that some big-name film producer or director could, without too much difficulty, create a big buzz by announcing a big project with big-shot talent from some popular novel that all are anxiously waiting to see as a film, and then also say it will only be available as a DVD purchase, and play it up all during production to the date of release. Such a project would have a tremendous news media buzz depending upon the players, and because of the unique release as well.

But it would take the kind of person with the recognition of a Speilberg who's know for quality stuff (generally), and who also has that same penchant for project security. And it's gotta be really good too.

Has anybody here heard of "Harrow Alley", also known as 'the best script ever not been made into film'? That might be a good choice, and it has quite a history in the film industry. I got to read the script in grad school and it really was a Gone With The Wind type of spectacle. But I digress...

I agree with the idea that Home theaters take away from theatrical releases. I know personally I don't go to the theater nearly as much as I used to before I got a home theater. I go see the big blockbusters, but I saw The Bourne Ultimatum in theaters and thoroughly hated the experience. A family of big fat heads sat in front of my friends and me pretty much ruining the entire viewing. Stupid big fat head people!!

So I will enjoy watching TBU at home on hd-dvd when it comes out. I'm sure there were things I missed, and I'll enjoy the movie more.
