Not sure, we'll see though. What I hope to be able to do with it is rip any bluray discs I get, and save the .ts file on my VMC and be able to play it back from a cheap external 1TB drive. I've successfully ripped some of my HD-DVDs to a file around 8Gb and can tell no difference between that and the straight disc (although I'm not using anything more advanced than TrueHD for audio, so there could be differences there... but fine for my system as it is now).

I was just saying to my GF a few minutes ago, it's sad that for the first time, I have actually considered copying movies, like my parents and so many people I know do. I don't want to do it because I know it is wrong. But I DO want to do it to stick it in the eye of the BDA.

No, I doubt I will ever do it. It's just, you know?

Now, what I would consider doing, is picking up a BDRW Drive, like that LG combo piece, and rip to either internal video server storage, or a NAS. I think I might have to stand by not purchasing any title that had BD+ on it just out of spite tho...

BD+ is now fully cracked and the BD+ discs are able to be transcoded like any other BD disc. The guys at SlySoft obviously are ahead of the game... They fully cracked BD+, which has zero public documentation, in less than a year. I have faith that no matter what Macrovision attempts to do with BD+, SlySoft will continue to crack it. And thanks to the laws in Antigua, studios can't do jack to touch SlySoft legally.

Now, the next step may be the one BD+ detractors fear. Will Fox now attempt to start deleting and modifying files on people's hard drives in an effort to defeat AnyDVD HD? Will they continue to try to change BD+ in an effort to outsmart SlySoft (good luck)? Or will they simply give up as the other studios have by not using BD+ (which costs a lot of money to license) in the first place?

Some time ago you stated that you prohibited your BD player software from having rights to run code without user permission. What were you doing to ensure this?

Vista User Account Control can take care of it by itself in Vista. As long as you don't give PowerDVD Admin rights, BD+ can't do much harm in Vista.

XP is tougher, though - by default, BD+ can do pretty much anything on XP (including rootkit installation). There is no real OS-level way to limit BD+ in XP and have your system fully accessible otherwise, in XP you'd need to use a third party program like Comodo Firewall and use its Defense+ system to limit PowerDVD's abilities and/or deny running of BD+ code:
Free Firewall Protection Software Best Firewall Computer Security Free Personal Firewall

Darn, I thought maybe PowerDVD provided an option to curtail BD's powers. I'm aware of Vista and XP's various options (as an OS), but neither instill me with much confidence.

Quite the contrary. PowerDVD has been actively working with the studios to use all the features of the DRM in order to curb piracy. For instance, they disabled playback of movies from HDD file after AACS was cracked. Of course, all of that stuff was bypassed by pirates despite their best efforts. PowerDVD seems to be in bed with the studios, so while it may be your friendly BD player software it is also the trojan horse to run rogue BD+ code.

By siding with the studios so much PowerDVD seems to have gained a large upper hand in the PC playback market... Not a coincidence IMO.

The obvious solution to that is to stop using them for DVD playback software. I have no particular love for that software...

That would be a great solution, but unfortunately all the other BD/HD DVD software players are a nightmare. WinDVD/Nero are filled with bugs and plain suck in some areas. Nothing really comes even close to PowerDVD Ultra at this point in time...

And hackers will always be even smarter. I wouldn't care about any of this if this extra cost in copy protection wasn't being passed along to us in the price of discs, which of course it is.

Or, Fox will respond by halting production just like they did when AACS was hacked.

Possibly, but it makes no sense. After all, they still release on DVD and there isn't any protection for them there.

MGM is till MIA.

Main difference being that the DVD market is too large to ignore unlike the BD market.

Although at this point, hopefully Fox will not pull tnat shit.

Exactly. Plus, the DVD ship already sailed by the time it's copy protection was broken. Fox was hoping to get this one nipped in the bud before it ever started.

Nice! Now you can buy overseas region locked BDs and back them up region free!
